"Since receiving this transfer, my family's lives have transformed positively. I ferry passengers on a motorbike to earn a living. On a good day, I earn just KES 150. This amount is not enough to cater for food, clothing and education for my three children. We had to have just two meals a day, even though my children wanted to eat more. You can imagine how painful this was for me as a father. I am grateful that all this has changed. We have bought enough food for us and can afford to have three meals a day. It's amazing how much GD has done for us." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"For many years, I have desired to construct a decent house for the family since the one I had was very small to fully accommodate my family of 9 members. My 3 grown-up daughters had to seek refuge from my neighbours every night some of that worried me a lot since they had to walk at night in the darkness. After receiving my transfer, I spent most of it to construct a 2 roomed decent house for my family which cost KES 37,000 in total. In addition, I used 3,000 to clear the fees arrears for my children. Furthermore, I used KES 8,800 to purchase proper bedding for the family we were using sacks as bedding which was not comfortable. I use the remaining amount to purchase 3 goats school for the children." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I bought four goats at a total cost of KES14000 because they are an investment that I can depend on in the future since it is only goats that can survive in this dry climate of our area. Also, goats will multiply and increase in numbers which means that I will be able to sell one or two when I am faced with a financial challenge. Then, I bought two sacks of maize at a total cost of KES3500 because maize is our staple food, buying a packet of maize flour every day is both expensive and time-wasting. I also repaired our motorcycle at a cost of KES5000 which will be helping us fetch water which is very far and at times we have to travel to various places looking for water, therefore , repairing our motorcycle is a huge relief to us."

"When I received the transfers I immediately decided to first settle my debts with the store keeper who had been lending us some help through provision of some materials in his store like maize flour when we were hungry back home and this includes me, my mother and brother. So I paid him KES 1000 for the items I had borrowed when I had no money. I also bought maize flour worth KES 1100 which was a dozen packets. Our village also has scarcity of drinking water so I sent a motorcycle rider to get me six gallons of water and plus his payment it went for KES 230. As for the rest of the money I used it in buying vegetables that we needed day to day like cabbages, kales and even tomatoes which was almost close to KES 670 because it was day to day." "" I purchased goods to sell. I have not sold goods before. I know that selling will give me the opportunity to earn my own money. If I have my own money, I will be independent and no man will take disadvantage over me because I will have my own purchasing power. I am saying this because I have had an experience before and I know that it will not continue any longer"." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I was on my way to my mother in law house when I received my GiveDirectly transfer alert. I was so happy and rejoicing and also thinking on how to used the money that was given to me. Because this is the first time in my life to received such money for free. It wasn't easy on me few years ago. To even get food to eat a day was a challenge for me. I wanted to go to school but didn't have the support to enroll. I feel blessed to be on this program and to be successfully enrolled as a recipient. I now have the hope that I am going to enroll myself in school. I am also trying to build my own house." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I bought food for my children with some of my money most especially for my sick son who I'm caring for. I have saved some of the money on my mobile money account to enable me attend to some of his medical expenses. My prayers is, to save more money to send my son to Ghana for proper treatment."
