How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before the money came in, my husband and I wanted to buy a motorcycle for the purposes of using it as a taxi since most people in our village used it as a means of transport and we also wanted to renovate our house since we only had one bedroom and most times when guests came we had nowhere to host them.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly managed to give me faith and hoped that some day I could have my own family because I wanted medical assistance for the longest time but the high medical bills was something I could barely afford so I am glad this program has enabled to restore my faith that some day I could have my own children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The first transfers enabled us to to purchase the motorcycle which my husband used as a taxi earning us at least KES 300 a day and so after getting the second transfers my husband and I decide I should take care of my health because for so many years I was married to my husband but unfortunately I could not get in the family way and I had happened to lose so many pregnancies through miscarriages which affected my self-esteem in most occasions because I really wanted to grow my family. So after I received the money I took myself to see a doctor and so the appointment, consultation and medication cost me KES 11,950 and considering the transportation fee to the hospital since I went twice it cost me around KES 6,000. I also decide to start my own business which was a store and it cost me around KES 3,500 since I sold basic stuff like maize flour, sardines and even sugar and this business would keep me occupied and I could earn some money as well.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was on my way going to our weekly meeting where we use to put our money together to help us in the future. I heard a loud message alert on my phone, I did not mind checking the message since I thought it was the usual morning messages from the service providers. On reaching at the meeting venue, the other members were happy for receiving their transfer and I had to check my phone. I was very happy for receiving my transfer since my long-term dream was about to be accomplished.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I no longer have to worry about how to get water for the family after purchasing a motorbike for myself. Previously, I had to hire someone to fetch water since I have a chest problem. In addition, it engages the taxi business where I earn income that helps me to meet my daily need like food more easily.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 37,000 to purchase a second-hand motorbike. This is because we had been experiencing drought in our area for the past 5 months and we are required to walk a long distance to find this important commodity in our life. Due to my health condition that requires me not to carry heavy loads, it's a challenging task for me. The motorbike will assist me a lot in fetching water for the family. In addition, my husband will use it as a taxi as well as carrying water for our neighbors at a fee. The remaining amount assisted me to improve the condition of my house by constructing an additional room. This is because our house was very small and I had to seek shelter from my neighbors or sleep in the kitchen whenever I receive guests. I also invested KES 3000 in my small kiosk business.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to go to the hospital and seek advanced medical attention. I have been married for the fifth year now. However, have been unable to give birth to any child. This has been stressing me plus the shame I get in my society. I am planning to use the transfer to seek medical attention so that I can get the treatment and give birth to atleast one child. This will earn me the respect I have always desired to in the village. Moreover, giving birth to a child will make my lovely husband happy.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. Despite the hardships am going through, I always feel happy in the morning whenever I wake up alive and healthy and I thank God for another beautiful day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The inability to bear any child has been the biggest hardship in my life. I always feel some pain whenever I see neighbours with their children yet I have none. I have been to several hospitals without any success. This has made my life difficult and am always an unhappy woman.
