"I spend all of my money on purchasing more dry goods to be added to my dry goods business. I really wanted to improve my business. There has been many other NGOs who had worked in this village for the so purpose of bettering our community. However, they never communicated the project to the community members. They couldn't identify what we really needed as individual improvement. Give Directly is doing very well for the betterment of the people's of River Cess County. I am grateful for all the immense contributions coming from GiveDirectly. I am overwhelmed by the level of improvement that is beginning to happen in tgis village. I am sure after our last transfer family lives will improve and our village by extension will look better."

"With the money I earn per month as a primary school teacher, I have been unable to fully sustain my family 12. With 27 years in service as a primary school teacher, I still have nothing to show given the burden of responsibility that has become unbearable. Receiving this money from GiveDirectly means I will be able to supplement my income source with a business. I am planning to start a petrol selling business in the village. My compound is close to our nearest trading center. With a lot of youth engaged in motorcycle riding, I believe this will be the ideal place to start my business. I already constructed a structure in the trading center and this is advantageous in that I won't incur the extra costs of renting a shop. I will save the profits from the business to take my two children to university."

"I would like to build a house for myself to be able to jumpstart my life. I'm currently living with my mother and sleeping in my brother's house. This condition makes it impossible to marry my fiance to whom I have been engaged for about six months. I have been meaning to finalize on everything but I still don't have somewhere to take her and means to take care of her. For that reason, I would also like to buy a motorcycle for taxi operations so that I can get a source of income."

"It's been getting harder by the day to afford food for my family of seven effectively in this times of draught. As a motorcycle taxi operator it's hard to make more than 1000 KES per day because the industry is flooded. A lot of young men like me joined in after losing their jobs during covid19 pandemic. That has increased the number of riders tremendously as compared to the number of client's available in the village. I'm sometimes forced to ferry charcoal bags which is banned and can attract legal problems on top of being dangerous considering the bad roads we have to use."

"RE: My greatest desire was completing my motorbike payment which seems actually impossible because traffic isn't doing pretty well here.
Moreover, I was often calculating when will over eight persons complete their payment before my turn.
but when givedirectly send my transfer it was amazing because i could finally clear the payment of my motorbike, something I would have taken a year or more to do was don't a second which am overly grateful to givedirectly for.
Today, because of givedirectly transfer i now own a motorbike which to me is an investment, am now riding for myself and i have even started saving to build my house soon."

"I am a motorcycle rider and I do the business of transporting people from one place to another. On that day, I was in my job and I heard a message ringtone on my phone. I could not check it at that time since I was riding. On arriving at the customer's destination, I pulled out my phone and I could not believe what I saw. The SMS was saying that I had received the lump sum transfer of KES 55000 that GiveDirectly had promised. I was so happy and I could not keep the good news to myself. I decided to go back home and inform my whole family about it. They were so happy to hear this and we celebrated together."

Peter
received a $490 initial payment.
"I am so happy that this transfer has positively changed my family's life. Before receiving this donation, my wife, child and I lived in a small one-bedroom house. It also served as a kitchen, which made us feel embarrassed whenever we would have visitors. I wished that I could change this so we could have a bit of privacy, but I only earn KES 500 a day, from ferrying passengers on my motorbike. The money was not enough for that. With this transfer, however, I have built a new, two-bedroom house, that has a separate kitchen. My family has a decent place to stay in and I am no longer embarrassed to host visitors. Thanks, GD!"
