Towett
received a $472 second payment.
"I had planned that when I get the second transfer, I will use the money on starting a small business selling clothes. I was however not able to fulfill the plan because I got into a motorcycle accident and I used the second transfer on my medical expenses. Despite what happened, I still have the plan and I am going to find a way to start it once I get well. I plan to engage in the farming of onions, maize, and tomatoes and sell them to raise the money that I need to start the business. I want to start a business because I want to be self-employed. I do not want to continue relying on the casual jobs that other people give me to earn a living. Through the business, I will be able to earn a better income than when I do casual jobs."

"Lack of employment is the current challenge I am facing. I do a small business of buying and selling charcoals . The profit is very little because I earn KES 300 from every 50kg bag I sell. During rains season , it is hard to find charcoals because people do agriculture and leave charcoal burning. So lack of job is the current challenge I face."

"I have no enough Capital for my business .I am using the resources from my business for domestic needs and therefore very hard for my business to grow. The distance I go to get my stock is big and therefore it needs to stock my shop once in a week so that I can cut down the cost of going to the same place every day using a motorcycle."

Athuman
received a $27 second payment.
"It has been a hard year this year. I decided to use all the money that is KES.3000 on food and water. This is because there are no rains we have not been able to plant anything on the farms so we have had to go in search of vegetables. Water too has been scarce making us buy water which has had to be transported by a motorcycle increasing the day's expenditure. Thanks to Give directly my family has yet to starve and is living comfortably."

"I have been in the motorcycle business for the past 5 months. On average, I usually get a profit of between KES 200 to KES 300. This amount is hardly able to sustain my needs and sometimes I even make a loss. To ensure a regular flow of income, I intend to use KES 40000 to buy a dairy cattle that is ready for milking. Through a proper feeding program, I envisage getting a surplus of 5 litres of milk daily corresponding to a profit of KES 250 daily. For the remaining amount of the transfer, I plan to build a kitchen and buy some household furniture."

"The transfer has so far changed my life in a big way. During the hard times when I am not able to raise enough money to pay off my debt, the transfer has helped me seek out that. I was happy that once I am done paying off the date I will fully own the motorcycle and I will use the money I earn to start other income generating projects. This will greatly help me change my life for the better."

"I do motorcycle taxi business as a way of livelihood. I am a father of one and my wife does not have a formal job. Due to adverse weather conditions in our area, farming does not do well enough to rely on. This makes my motorcycle taxi business our main source of income. I currently live under one single room house which acts as a kitchen, living room and a bedroom. I have had a dream to build another house, but the overwhelming daily family needs have not allowed me to. Receiving this money means a dream come true for my family. I am planning to spend the entire amount to build a semi-permanent spacious house. This will boost my self-esteem in society. I will enjoy a more comfy and will always be willing to welcome visitors to my home. Completion of this will assure me peace of mind and room to invest in other income-generating activities for my family."

"Taking care of my ailing father in hospital marked the end of my taxi business in town and this was the genesis of misery in my life. After spending four years in hospital, he died and I had to come back to the village. I later resorted to motorcycle riding, an occupation that has not been rewarding to an extent I always struggle to put a meal on the table. This is the biggest challenge I am facing to date."

"I work as a casual laborer in the construction sites, a job that earns me $10 only per week. This income is very low because I usually work for only 2 days a week since chances are not consistent. This renders me idle in most cases and I am worried that this can affect my future life. Hence, I consider the lack of a reliable source of income as the main challenge that I am currently facing."
