How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I had planned that when I get the second transfer, I will use the money on starting a small business selling clothes. I was however not able to fulfill the plan because I got into a motorcycle accident and I used the second transfer on my medical expenses. Despite what happened, I still have the plan and I am going to find a way to start it once I get well. I plan to engage in the farming of onions, maize, and tomatoes and sell them to raise the money that I need to start the business. I want to start a business because I want to be self-employed. I do not want to continue relying on the casual jobs that other people give me to earn a living. Through the business, I will be able to earn a better income than when I do casual jobs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well because they uplifted the lives of many people in the community. I was able to build another house that is roofed with iron sheets. I used to live in an old house that was grass-thatched and I didn't know where to get money to build another house. The people in my village were also able to make new developments such as building new houses, buying livestock, and paying for their children's school fees. They have hence become busy unlike before where people used to be idle most of the time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the whole of my second transfer on paying for a medical bill. I had planned to use the money on starting a business selling clothes but unfortunately, I got into a motorcycle accident and hence the money went to the payment of medical expenses. I didn't have any other source of money because I do not have a stable source of income. I usually do any casual work that I get such as farming, fencing to earn a living and I mostly get paid KES 300 per day. This money is little and most of it usually goes to the payment of school fees for my children and buying the daily food. I have hence not been able to make any developments.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the money I felt so happy. I remember vividly like yesterday that it was around 9am. When I heard a ringtone message from my phone. I was on the farm working. I reluctantly check it thinking it was just a usually messages from friends. I couldn't believe my eyes when I checked it, it was a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was so overwhelmed, I have never received such amount of money before. I stopped whatever I was doing at the farm and rushed home to inform my spouse. There was celebrations everywhere. I went and withdrew it that day and planned on building a better house for my family. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled me to achieve this goal of building a house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have build a better house for my family. The construction is currently on going. We live in small grass thatched house which is leaking from inside. The house cannot accommodate us comfortably. Whenever we have visitors it is so stressful since we have to host the outside. This is so demoralizing and always makes me shy from welcoming visitors. I used to do casual jobs in Narok town. I sell charcoals to earn an income to support my family. This job is so risky because it's illegal to burn charcoal in the forest. The police could chase us away and we could loose the charcoal which made us to start all over again. The amount of money that I get through this was so small and cannot meet all the basic needs of the family including saving to build a better house. When I received the transfer I felt so happy and stopped this illegal charcoal burning in the forest. I started to do my own work at home. Currently the construction of a new house is on going. We will move in with my family and live happy. I will no longer shy off to welcome visitors to my house. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has enabled me to achieve my dream.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the money I received from GiveDirectly on building a better house for my family. The construction is currently on going. We live in a small grass thatched house which was leaking from inside. It could not host all the family members comfortably. I am so happy because in the next few weeks we will move in to the new house. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes for my children. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
When I receive this money, I will budget $200 to buy a cow which will enable me feed my family in future through the sell of milk, also I will set aside $300 to build a two roomed(iron sheet) house now that we are living in a single grass touched house. The remaining $500 will go to my enterprise (boutique) I have had an experience selling second hand clothes as my casual job. This has been my dream enterprise that I can finally start.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is at around 9pm EAT, this is the time I always go to sleep. I feel good this time because I have achieved what I had planned for the day and provided for the family especially when I come from my casual job.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I dropped out of school while I was in class seven since my family faced challenges in providing food and paying school fees for us. This left me relying on casual jobs to provide for my family which has been a big struggle for me, I earn almost a $2 per day which is not enough for us.
