"I have a plan to construct a shop and start a business. This is what I had planned to do before I got my second transfer. I was however not able to fulfill the plan because I, unfortunately, got involved with my brother in a motorcycle accident and hence I spent the whole of the second transfer on medical expenses. I have a motorcycle that I bought with my first transfer. I hence usually do the business of transporting people and goods from one place to another. Having recovered, I plan to continue with the motorcycle business and raise money for starting the shop business. This business is what I had always wanted to do but I was not in a position to start it due to a lack of money. I used to work as a security guard at Nairobi but I had to leave the job because I fell ill and hence I came back home. The money that I used to make it at the time, most of it used to go to the payment of school fees for my brother who was in college."

"I spent most of my transfer which was KES 40000 on my house that is still in the process of completion because I didn't have one before. I used to sleep in a borrowed one which required me to put up with inconveniences and interruptions by the owners, which is the very reason I do much desired to have my own. I am so grateful, happy and proud that it's only a matter of time and I'll be sleeping comfortably in my own house, free from any inconvenience and interruption or interference. I also spent KES 7500 on buying three goats because that was the next thing on my to-do list and an investment that will live on and I will be able to count on, to address some of the challenges I will face in the future. They will be a source of food, in milk for my family as well as in the event of any celebration, I won't have to buy one since I'll be having a couple. I am so happy and grateful, all thanks to GiveDirectly." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"We spent the entire second transfer on buying a motorcycle. We decided to buy the motorcycle because the school where my husband usually teaches is very far. He hence usually incurs a lot of costs traveling. He spends approximately KES 750 when the roads are good but when they are bad, he spends approximately KES 1000 to reach there. This is costly to him because he is casually employed at the school. We were not able to buy the motorcycle before because we didn't have the money. Most of the money that we used to make used to go to the payment of my college fees. With having bought the motorcycle, my husband has been able to save some money because he no longer incurs a lot of costs on traveling, he just needs to pay for the fuel. Also, the motorcycle has been of great help to us whenever my husband is at home because he is able to rush very quickly to get something that we might be needing in the household or at the farm. We are therefore so much grateful to GiveDirectly for the help they have given unto us."

"We have a plan to build another house. The house that we live in has become old and is made of mud on the walls and the floor. Getting mud for smearing the house has become a challenge. I also usually do not have the time to smear mud on the house to make it look good. This hence is the reason why we want to build another house that is made of wooden planks on the walls and cemented on the floor. This way we will be able to avoid the challenges of getting mud and our house will be looking modern just like that of others in the community. We plan to get the money for building the house from the businesses that my husband usually does. He has a powersaw and he usually saws timber. He also has a motorcycle and he usually engages in the business of transporting people from one place to another. He makes about KES 3000 for every job that gets from the powersaw, while as for the motorcycle, he makes approximately KES 750 per day. He plans to save some of the money that he makes so that we can use it in starting the construction of the house."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is the income generation investment on a motorcycle. It has been feeding not only me in my household but also my wife and a young kid back at her parents' home. They had been appreciative to GiveDirectly as well since this has changed a lot in our household that we never expected. Saving more than KES 250 per day is such amazing progress I am seeing in our household. All credit goes to GiveDirectly for the great support."

"Receiving this means a constant supply of milk to my household. My desire has always been to own a dairy cow for milk production to feed my family of 6. I currently purchase 2 litres of milk daily from the milk vendors. This is consuming most of the household finances as I purchase a litre at KES 40 that could have otherwise been used to cater for other family needs as clothing for the children. My family depend on the motorcycle taxi business that generates KES 400 daily at peak. This is used to pay school fees for my 3 school going children and to purchase food for the household . With Givedirectly, my hope of owning a cow will come to pass as I intend to use KES 50000 to purchase lactating cow." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"Receiving money means a better living standard of my family. I do motorcycle taxi as my source of income. Currently this business is not longer profitable like before I used to earn around KES 500 per day but now it is around KES 200. This is as a result of bad economy we are experience now in our county Kenya. This and other incomes from subsistence farming I do has assist me to pay school fees for my 3 children who are in primary and other one in secondary level. For the past 6 years now I have not be able to save any so as to assist me do other generating income. We are planing to use around KES 40,000 to purchase a dairy cow. The rest I will use in paying school fees for my children and meet other fanily basic needs."
