How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a plan to construct a shop and start a business. This is what I had planned to do before I got my second transfer. I was however not able to fulfill the plan because I, unfortunately, got involved with my brother in a motorcycle accident and hence I spent the whole of the second transfer on medical expenses. I have a motorcycle that I bought with my first transfer. I hence usually do the business of transporting people and goods from one place to another. Having recovered, I plan to continue with the motorcycle business and raise money for starting the shop business. This business is what I had always wanted to do but I was not in a position to start it due to a lack of money. I used to work as a security guard at Nairobi but I had to leave the job because I fell ill and hence I came back home. The money that I used to make it at the time, most of it used to go to the payment of school fees for my brother who was in college.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly uplifted my life because they enabled me to buy a motorcycle and hence I was able to start my business of transporting people and goods from one place to another. I didn't have any job to do after I left my job as a security guard at Nairobi due to my poor health. Other than that, they also did well because they enabled people in my community to do various developments such as building new houses, buying livestock, and many more. I hence urge them to continue with the same spirit of helping those who are in need.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the whole of my second transfer on paying for my medical expenses. My brother and I, unfortunately, got involved in a motorcycle accident. I had planned to use the money in constructing another house and starting a shop business but that did not come to pass. I am getting well and I still have the plan to achieve my goals. I plan to go back to doing the motorcycle business where I transport people from one place to another to raise the money that I need in starting the business and thereafter to build another house.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was feeding my neighbors livestock when he came and informed me that Give Directly had sent the promised money. I quickly rushed back home since I had left my phone behind, powered it on and after confirming that I had also received mine, I called my brother who works in the nearby town who promised to accompany me to go and purchase a motorcycle as I had planned. Receiving this money meant that my life would never remain the same again and this made me so happy.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I used to depend on my immediate family and taking loans in order to meet most of my needs and I would sometimes sleep on an empty stomach for not wanting to disturb others. This started after I developed some health complications that made me to resign from the security firm I was working for. Living alone and not being able to fend for myself had almost led me to depression as I would only do some casual jobs that do not require a lot of energy. Currently, I offer taxi services to people and this has changed my life for the better. I am now able to cater for my basic needs and save some money for future use and I am glad and grateful to Give Directly for making this possible.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Financial constraints has been my major challenge. My family land is small and one is not able to even plant vegetables hence I have to buy all the foodstuffs. I used to work in a security firm but had to resign after developing some health complications and since I had not become strong enough, I would only do some jobs that do not require a lot of energy and this made me to rely on my relatives as I would borrow money or food from them most of the time. Upon receiving my transfer, I decided to purchase a second-hand motorcycle at KES 52000 so that I can be using it to offer taxi services and earn some money that can sustain me. Using the remaining KES 2800, I bought foodstuffs and household necessities to last my family for some time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Recieving this money means I will achieve my dream of building a good house and start a timber yard which I have always admired to do. I am an orphan and live with my brother who is a casual laborer at a timber yard near our home. We leave in a small compound that we got from our uncles and we always have to look for casual jobs with my brother in order to get something to eat. This has been a struggle from our side since we lost our parents. I plan to spend 400 dollars to build a new house, spend 50 dollars to start my timber yard business and spend the remaining to stock food for us.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am happy during the day, since in the day time my health is in good condition that I can communicate well unlike at night when it's cold and I can struggle to talk.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been ailing for quite a longtime and being an orphan at home has really given me turf lessons in life, I have to struggle and look for casual jobs that sustain me and my brother. I even lost my voice out of the condition that I had, so I lost some communication with other people because I have to struggle to explain what I can and they don't understand me, I have been depending to my brother who is also a casual laborer.
