Jumwa
received a $462 initial payment.
"It was in the evening at around 4 pm when my helper came home from fetching some water. No sooner had she kept the bucket of water than she asked for my phone and I gave her. Within some seconds, she told me that I had received the first transfer from GiveDirecly. I was so happy for receiving such a huge amount of money at once. But, I was having some questions. How did she know that the money had been? She informed me that, she heard people at the water points saying that they had received their transfers."

Elvina
received a $462 initial payment.
"I spent a huge portion of my first cash transfer on paying the pending fee arrears in the secondary school a managed to take her to college as well. It was a bit of a stressful moment for us because we did not have any idea how we would get the cash needed. I am hopeful that her future will be brighter. Also, I bought foodstuffs worthy of KES 5000 and visited my mother since she has been unwell and starving. Additionally, I bought equipment like, pipes, and tanks and I am intending to start a new business soon( selling freshwater). I will however consider this as my reliable source of income since I have depended on temporary jobs all along. I later bought foodstuffs with the remaining cash."

Esther
received a $462 initial payment.
"It was around 5 pm we were just relaxing at home with my children when I heard a message notification from my phone. When my helper checked it out she said that it was a message confirming that give directly has sent KES 55,000. I felt so happy because that was the highest amount I have ever received. I was in a position to purchase a water tank for storing clean water for domestic uses. We went to withdraw money the following day and started planning with my family."

Daisy
received a $462 initial payment.
"I received my transfer around 8 p.m., just as I was about to go to bed. I was overjoyed and grateful to God for the transfer at such an appropriate time. Previously, I was burdened by debts incurred to support my family. At the time of enrollment, I intended to use the transfer to pay off my debts and purchase a 3,000-litre water tank. I immediately informed my husband, who was at work at the time because he is a security officer. He, too, was overjoyed, and he attributed it to God's divine intervention."

Kadzo
received a $462 initial payment.
"The transfer enabled me to build a pit latrine to use with my family. I was doing open defecation in the bushes and nearby forests which was exposing me to waterborne diseases like cholera. I no longer need to go to bushes since I have access to the pit latrine together with my children. I am happy that my children are not exposed to illnesses and are now safe and using the pit latrine. It would have taken me a long time to make this happen at my own cost hence the biggest difference in my daily life so far."

Christine
received a $447 second payment.
"Currently, I do not have any new goals except ensuring that the existing ones see the light of the day . I had started saving much of my transfer with an intension of purchasing a piece of land and there after putting up rentals on it . Being a seasonal farmer come shoe vendor I will be looking forward to good business that will enable me realize my main plan as outlined. Besides, I am looking forward to curbing the water shortage that has been a challenge by having high water capacities tanks that will also translate into me vending water. Currently, I have tapped water which is never sustainable due to lack of reservoir tanks especially during raining seasons. This will save me a grate deal on matters water storage. Moreover, I will cease buying water from water vendors thus saving some coins from it. Thank you GiveDirectly."

Daisy
received a $464 initial payment.
"I had been living with my three children on a small portion of land beside my parents. All that time, I had been moving out to lease some other pieces to till and plant to provide for my children. In addition, I could not construct a permanent structure since I have always known that I will move. On receiving the first transfer, I set aside KES 45000 and currently looking for a piece of land to buy. I also purchased some foodstuff worth KES 4250, a water container, and utensils at KES 13000, and used the remaining on new pairs of clothes and some in paying their school fees. I am grateful and hope that I will soon find a piece of land to buy so that I can start the construction with the second transfer."

Martha
received an initial payment.
"I have been spending a lot of money on buying water from neighbours who own water taps since there is a persistent water shortage in my region. I am greatly relieved now because, through the transfer, I installed my own water tap and a tank to store enough water. I am now selling the water which has now become a source of income. I purchased the water pipes, and meter and paid for the labour cost involved. I am happy that I am no longer incurring the cost of buying water. Apart from this, I also spent the remaining amount on buying saloon equipment and rented a premise. I am skilled in hairdressing though I was working from home. My clients were however not comfortable with this and at times I had to visit them at their homes. I am happy that I started my own salon and was fully equipped with the necessary equipment which I bought through my first transfer. I also paid for my children's school fees and did shopping for foodstuffs for my family on the small portion that remained."

Kache
received a $26 second payment.
"As the family's breadwinner, I rely on charcoal to make ends meet. Due to the low market demand, I only make KES 1200 per month, which barely covers the family's basic needs such as food. When things get tough, I'm forced to take maize flour on credit from the store, promising to repay later. So, when I received the transfer, I spent KES 500 on food and water. I spent the KES 2,500 on a goat. The plan is to let it multiply and then sell the offspring to fund my basic needs."
