How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before relocating to the village I was a tailor, My short-term goal is to purchase a machine that I would use for tailoring. I already build a space where I can work in. A lot of women in the village are interested in the business and my long-term goal is to open a school and enroll them at a fee.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Whenever we get the transfer, GiveDirectly makes sure to call us and get our responses as to whether we got the money or not. They also make an effort to educate us on various ways how to spend money according to our needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before the transfer, I lived in Ukunda working as a tailor. Unfortunately, my mothers in-law got sick and my family relocated to Ganze to take care of her. Since then I have been there for her. I also have an eye problem (cataract) that I have struggled with for a while. When I was staying in Ukunda I had access to a hospital where I would go for checkups once a month but relocating to the Ganze has not enabled me to go to my monthly checkup which has worsened my eye condition. Currently, the eye is blind. This has hindered me to get jobs causing my family to lack money for school fees, most times they are chased out due to the arrears. Receiving this money has enabled me to pay school fees arrears that had accumulated to $200, build a house for $450, and bought chairs and tables.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7 in the evening when I was about to take my meal when I noticed that I had received my first cash transfer. I honestly couldn't express my joy because the money would bring a positive impact on my life. I was now convinced that my daughter will finally join college which meant a lot to us .
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to clear the huge fees arrears for my daughter in secondary school and managed to get enrolled on a computer packages college. She finished her o'level exams one year ago and she has been staying home idling because we did not have sufficient cash to facilitate her further studies. As a parent, this used to frustrate me since I have always been wanting to see her prosper since I never had the opportunity to go to school. Being my only child offering her the best inheritance was education. However, this was in vain since my spouse and I was not well off. Providing for her basic needs was sometimes a channel. I can't thank the organisation enough because I can now see light at the end of the tunnel upon seeing my daughter in college.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge portion of my first cash transfer on paying the pending fee arrears in the secondary school a managed to take her to college as well. It was a bit of a stressful moment for us because we did not have any idea how we would get the cash needed. I am hopeful that her future will be brighter. Also, I bought foodstuffs worthy of KES 5000 and visited my mother since she has been unwell and starving. Additionally, I bought equipment like, pipes, and tanks and I am intending to start a new business soon( selling freshwater). I will however consider this as my reliable source of income since I have depended on temporary jobs all along. I later bought foodstuffs with the remaining cash.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I took my only child to secondary school and she finished her studies this year. She still has school fees in arrears and her results are pending till I clear the balance. This has always been a nightmare for me because without the paper my child cannot go for further studies. I intend to clear the fee balance of 10,000 KES and take her to a college of her house for further studies. I believe education is the key to success. I started my business recently selling water to my village people, I intend to open a small kiosk at my water point to sell vegetables to all the women who come to fetch water. I speculate for a better tomorrow.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My firstborn daughter succeeded in finishing her secondary school. I had invested so much to see her excel and indeed she has made us proud. She finished with school fees arrears but I thank God.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I opened a water kiosk to sell to my village people this business flourished for the past three months. This month it is the rainy season and people tap rainwater and this makes it has for people to come and fetch water at my place. I have been getting fewer returns of 100 KES per day and this is inadequate to cater for food and buy clothes. How I wish the rains could stop so that I can continue with my business.
