"Before these cash transfer, I had plans of starting a poultry farm so that I could easily support my family with basic needs like paying school fees but I could since I never had start up capital. However, GiveDirectly has made my dream come true. I now own a poultry farm and already my hens are hatching. Secondly, I also sell silver fish which is helping me meet the day to day needs like food and medication which I could not afford in the past."

"My life is much better now because I had a lot of debts that I accrued when my daughter passed on. I did not have any financial support at that time. I am grateful that GiveDirectly chose to send us the cash transfers. In addition to this, I have paid school fees for my children. This would not have been possible had I not received these cash transfers."

"I have been able to venture into large scale farming to help in raising more income for the family. We are sure to get food supply throughout the season and also sell some to generate income for the family. The income we generate helps in paying school fees for my child who gets ample time to study in school. I have also been able to buy building materials like cement and sand that I used to plaster to help my house look beautiful and also get rid of the bugs and colds and flu due to dust."

"I had to drop out of school four years ago due to lack of school fees when my father who paid the fees disappeared from home and abandoned us. Things became tough for my mother who had to struggle to cater for our daily needs even though she had no source of income and only relied on small scale farming, so I had to step up and assist her. I had to take on casual jobs available within the village to earn some money to support my mother because I could not land any decent jobs due to my education status. This was very frustrating to me because the jobs paid very little and were very irregular, so I decided to take a course locally at a garage on motor vehicle repair knowing fully well that the transfers I receive will cater for all the money required by the tutors. My daily life has changed because now I have hope for a better future because the skills I am acquiring will benefit me later to land a decent better paying job and put me in a better position to provide for my family."

"These transfers have made it possible for me to clear my children's school fees for the year which gives me a lot of relief. Four months ago, my children still had a lot of arrears in their respective schools and I was constantly worried about how I would raise the whole amount required to clear the fees on time. Pooling together the transfers we earn as a family made it possible to raise a good amount that when I combined to my savings was enough to clear all the balances. I am quite pleased and less stressed now because I have a chance to start saving for one of my children who will be joining high school next year."

"I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials. I bought cement, sand, and wire mesh and pipes to construct with the aim of building a pit latrine. Previously we used to go the bush to relieve ourselves since we had no decent latrines. This lead to an outbreak of waterborne diseases such as cholera, and typhoid especially during the rainy seasons. I am glad moving forward I won't be part of this disaster. In addition to building the pit latrine, I took the remaining materials to renovate my house. I also paid for some school fees and bought a new school uniform. I finally used the remaining amount to buy foodstuffs for my family."

"Education for my son is my biggest priority. Receiving this money means I will be able to pay his secondary school fees which is about 18500 shillings per term. Since he will be completing his secondary education next year, I plan to also buy livestock which I will sell later to sponsor his college education. "

"The biggest difference in my daily life for the last four months is that my living standards have improved. The money has sustained me and my family so well through meeting the cost of paying laborers who have been assisting me on my farm and paid the school fees for my grandchildren on time. My grandchildren have not gotten any distractions from their studies due to lack of school fees. I really thankful to God for sending GiveDirectly to our village because there is a lot of improvement in my life."

"Receiving this money will enable me accomplish three things that I had set to do before the year ends; clear school fees arrears, build a house and buy a cow.The current economic times have made the cost of living very high hence the little money I earn from constructing houses has not allowed me to make savings in order to fulfil the above. This is therefore a God-given opportunity for me to do so and I am grateful to GiveDirectly"

"Receiving this money will enable us to attain a stable source of income. I am a peasant farmer while my husband is into house construction. Presently, his job is not doing very well since most people are not building due to shortage of water. In a month the most that he has been making is ksh.5000. This amount is has never been enough to balance between buying food, paying school fees and buying other school items like books, pens, uniforms etc for all our 6 children. With this money, my husband will invest ksh.50,000 in starting general shop business in Mombasa where as I will invest ksh.15,000 to buy a cow and ksh.38,000 in purchasing two oxen and the ox plough to help me improve my farming.
