Mary
received a $244 fourth payment.
"My goal now is to have my new house built. I have lived in this house for about a decade now. As seeing the roof no longer holds the rain waters especially during the rainy seasons. We are sometimes force to change the position of our beds and other important things when it is raining. I am so happy for the first time I am going own a zinc house and I will no longer travel that far distance to cut thatch to repair my roof."

"If my spouse and I are qualify to receive the transfer we want to buy zinc and build a new house. The reason we want to build a new house is that the one we're in have problem, it's old and when rain fall sometimes water can flash all in our room which is not good for the well being of our kids and even ourselves."

Sammy
received a $459 initial payment.
"I had been living in an old hut in proximity to a small dam with my two children. For a long time, I hoped to move it a little further since the infestation of mosquitoes and the extreme cold because of the closeness to the water body were unbearable for my young children. On receiving the first transfer, this was a call to answer by constructing another decent and spacious house away from the dam. with KES 35000, I bought 24 iron sheets, building poles and frames, nails, and other construction materials that completed the construction. I am happy that I paid the entire cost of construction and finally connected electricity that has illuminated every corner of my house. Purchasing a new piece of furniture at KES 5000 was the second item on my list, and this has made the interior part of my room look good. In addition, I have just started the construction of a new kitchen with the remaining KES 8000 and am confident to complete it in a month's time."

Carren
received an initial payment.
"I used KES 8000to buy furniture and a water tank for my household. Another KES 8000 was used to buy food for the family and Kes 20000 was used to buy a dairy cow. I was also able to buy a smartphone worth Kes 7000 and the remainder was used to buy clothes for my children. The decision to buy a dairy cow was because this is one of the main economic activity in our area and which will see me and my family be in a position to easily make ends meet. I had not been able to accomplish some of the things that I accomplished because I normally rely on farming which is largely subsistence and getting such huge amount of money to invest can proof to be tough. I am proud that I was able to finally invest the money in the ways I did and I am looking forward to making my life and that of my family better going forward ."

Joyce
received an initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is purchasing a water tank. This has been my wish since we used to walk for quite a long distance to collect clean water for drinking. This was so tiresome. Whenever it rains there was no storage facility thus it was making us not top harvest rainwater. I have always owned a water tank but I had no money. Majorly I depend on small-scale farming, I plant vegetables and maize. This is mainly for consumption and whenever there is a surplus I sell to earn some amount to meet other basic household items. I had no other extra money to save so that I can buy a tank. We were being exposed to water-related diseases since we would drink dirty water. Currently, I have a water tank, whenever it rains we can harvest rainwater and treat it. We no longer get exposed to water-related diseases like before since we drink clean water. I have saved time that I could have used to collect water from the river to work on my farm. I am so happy because were it not GiveDirectly all this could not have happened."

Sidi
received a $461 second payment.
"I had begun construction on a two-bedroom house when I received the second transfer. My former house had crumbled on the mud walls due to heavy rains, allowing the cold to enter at night. Only the roof was left to be built on the new structure. As a result, I spent KES 19,800 for wooden planks and hired a contractor to install the roofing iron sheets. In addition, I paid KES 4,000 to clear the outstanding fee school debt for my three primary school children so that they could study without being disrupted to collect the balances. I deposited KES 15,000 at the shop where we procure groceries that are usually billed at the end of each month. At least, I would be able to feed my family for the next two months without worrying about how I would pay off the accrued debt, given the meager income my husband and I get from our casual jobs of livestock raising and charcoal burning. Furthermore, I purchased a goat for KES 3,500. The idea is to allow it to reproduce so that I may sell them for an income in the future. Finally, I spent the remainder of the transfer on clothing. Considering the scarcity of cleaning water in my neighborhood, I purchased an extra pair of school uniforms for each of my children to guarantee they had enough clean ones to change."

Kitsao
received a $461 initial payment.
"I spent my transfer to purchase a sewing machine for KES 10,000. This was for my wife who is experienced in dressmaking but lacked the capital to acquire a machine. Previously, she was working for someone earning a very low income which could not sustain her and the needs of the entire family. I also bought a second-hand motorbike for KES 10,000 that will assist me in fetching water for the family since we are currently getting water from a very far place that is 20 kilometers away. Moreover, I will use it to engage in a taxi business that will earn income for the family. With the two income-generating activities, we will be able to cater for the needs of the family as well as save for our future. In addition, I spent KES 11,000 to purchase modern bedding since we were using old traditional ones which were uncomfortable. The remaining amount assisted me in acquiring enough food for the family that has been feeding it till now."

Catherine
received a $460 initial payment.
"I am a businesslady running a shop at our nearby market center. I had desired to venture into crop farming an alternative source of income to supplement my earnings. After receiving the transfer, I used KES 40,000 to connect tap water to the firm where I am planning conduct irrigation farming. My intention is to growing vegetables, such as sukuma wiki, tomatoes and kales for sale. With this project, I anticipate to make huge profits since there is ready market due on high demand of vegetables. In addition, I used KES 8000 to clear school fees for my 2 kids who are in grade 3 and 2 at private school . Lastly, I used the remaining amount to purchase sufficient foodstuffs for the family since we have been experiencing famine in our area for over 1 years now."
