"Before receiving the money, I had budgeted to start rearing chicken again after losing all that I had due to the poultry infection outbreak. The moment I received my transfer I felt excited because I knew it would help me achieve the goal of owning chickens again. I did not share the news with anyone but celebrated on my own."

"I have six children plus my spouse whom all depend on me. I ride a motorcycle once in a while because I neither own one nor am I assigned one but there are times when some of my friends lend me theirs whenever they want to take a break. Since I am not a regular rider, I do not earn enough from it to sustain my family and there are times when it takes a week before I get lucky to have one. Four of my children who are in Ikanga primary school had not paid for their examination fees. The moment when I received my transfers I immediately paid KES 500 in school. I am glad I was able to pay the fees on time and that they were allowed to sit for their examinations. Besides that, I also bought two chickens for rearing at KES 500. I am hoping to purchase more with the coming transfers so that I can sell them in the future to raise money for my household needs. The remaining KES 180 I used to pay for a solar lump subscription of three days. I am thankful for the support since it was a reliever."

"My new goal is to be able to be able to improve my poultry keeping business. When I received my second transfer, I embarked on setting up a poultry house and I was also able to buy some few chicken that helped me start up a poultry keeping project. Right now I have 30 chicken that I keep and my goal is to make it to 100 chicken by end of this year. I do not intent to buy any additional chicken but I have intentions of breeding the ones that I currently have. This investment is easy to manage and will serve as an alternative source of income for us as a family. I will no longer have to rely on masonry work that I normally rely on but I will have diversified sources of income like the one that I currently have through dairy keeping. I feel my wife is now more supportive to me through such projects. We will be able to meet the needs of our four children much more easily than we have been able to do before."

"I used KES 15000 from my second transfer to start an electronics business and used another KES 23000 to buy a dairy cow that was a heifer then. The remaining amount was used to dance my compound with chain link. These three investments were made in an effort to make ourselves more stable financially. The money came at the right time when my wife has just completed her college education and us being a young family, we needed to think of ways that we would be more stable financially going forward. The fencing of the compound would see us do poultry keeping and I am happy that we already have 15 chicken for a start. We look forward to seeing more income from dairy, electronic business and milk selling. I am a father of one and my plan is to use the proceeds from my various businesses to pay school fees for our child and meet other immediate family's expenses."

"My dream has always been to be a poultry farmer. However, due to financial constraints, saving money to buy chickens and ducks has been difficult. As a motorcycle rider, the little money I make barely provides food for my household for the entire month. That is why, when I received the transfer, I spent KES 600 on a duck to supplement my existing flock of six chickens. Selling these animals in the future will generate a substantial income to meet the needs of my children. I spent the remaining funds on food. My family had run out of maize flour that afternoon, and efforts to acquire funds for more had proved futile, so the financial transfer proved useful."

"Owning chickens is the most significant difference that has happened in my life since I received the transfer. Unlike before, I now have an investment that will potentially generate money during emergencies in the future. When these chickens breed and grow the flock, it will be easy to sell them and raise funds."

"After I graduated from high school in March this year, the next step was to pursue an electrical training course from January next year. However, from what my mother makes as a house-help, it is challenging to save for my studies after spending her income on basic needs like food. To ensure that I have a steady supply of income while in school, I decided to invest in livestock keeping. After all, I had sold all my chickens to raise funds for my high school fees over the last four years. So, I am certain, that this venture will undoubtedly see me through college as well. This is why I spent KES 500 from the cash transfer to purchase two hens to start rearing. I also paid a registration fee of KES 200 to the school and am expecting to join in January 2023. The reason for registering this early for admission was to obtain a letter from the college to back my bursary application from the government offices. I saved the remaining amount to help me secure studying materials when the time comes."

"I plan on starting a goat rearing project, this is easy to manage and it can also be an additional source of income. At the moment I don't have the cash at hand to initiate the project but I am hopeful that I would be able to save up money from the chicken project. I am so grateful for the opportunity that came our way for us to uplift our lives."

"When I withdrew the money, I opted to clear a balance of KES 30000.00 for the plot which I bought using the first transfer. I did this to avoid coming into collision with the owner who sold me the piece of land. Thereafter, I used the remaining KES 24000.00 to boast my poultry business which I had. I bought more chicken to ensure that the business grows well. This is because the growth of the business will enable me to sustain and provide for my family's needs."

"Yes, I do have new goals. Since I added some chickens to my flock after receiving transfers from GiveDirectly, I have seen an increase in revenue through the sale of eggs. I plan to add some more chicken so that I can earn more income through the venture. The savings which I have made from the sale of eggs are enough to expand the poultry farming project so that I can earn more profits."
