How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I plan on starting a goat rearing project, this is easy to manage and it can also be an additional source of income. At the moment I don't have the cash at hand to initiate the project but I am hopeful that I would be able to save up money from the chicken project. I am so grateful for the opportunity that came our way for us to uplift our lives.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
We are forever grateful for the support that lifted my living standards tremendously. Our lives have been impacted positively courtesy of GiveDirectly without paying anything in return. The organization is well organised in how they carry out their work thus I have not seen anything that is not done well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Building a decent house for my family has been my dream for a long time. Though I was unable to fulfil it due to financial constraints. I am a farmer and a mother of three children. I used my initial transfer in building a decent house for my family, it was incomplete due to insufficient funds due to the high cost of building materials. I, therefore, used KES 15,000 on my second transfer in completing the house. I then used KES 10,000 in starting a poultry project and I am hopeful that I would be able to make a profit from it. I was unable to initiate the protection before due to financial constraints since our lands are no longer fertile due to climatic changes. Finally, I used the remaining amount on foodstuffs and clothes. I am grateful for the support that lifted my living standards amazingly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9.00a.m when I received a message in my phone, upon checking it was a receipt of promised funds from Givedirectly.I was so happy and thankful to God since I knew with the great plans I had the future would be great.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is seeing a dairy of my own grazing in my small piece of land.It gives me joy that at the end of the day I will get milk to serve my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
On receiving the first transfer, we withdrew Kshs.38,000 and spent it on buying a dairy cow. This has changed a lot since we use to spend a lot of money in buying milk everyday. With 1litre costing Ksh.60,it was really a struggle for us because we depended on manual jobs to get something small at the end of the day. With family of five, this had proven to be impossible hence at times we could skip buying.Thee dairy cow we bought can now provide us with enough milk for usage. With Kshs.20,000 I spent on purchasing materials for building a modern kitchen since the one we had was a grass-thatched house and we could be rained on. I look forward to completing the house with my second transfer. With the remaining amount, I bought clothes and food for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have always wished to buy a cow that would help me reduce the budden of buying milk daily for my family consumption. KSH 30,000 of my transfer will therefore enable me to fulfill this wish. I also intend to buy 10 sheep @ KSH 3000 each. Sheep multiplies at a faster rate hence this will be my store of wealth to be sold whenever need for money arises.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My spouse works Nairobi and only comes home whenever he is on leave. My communication with him is usually in the evening after he is done with his day's work, and this is the time I am always happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I owned two surplus-milk-producing cattle 4 years ago and they were my daily source of income. I used to sell 8 liters of milk daily which amounted to KSH 560 daily. I was able to support my spouse in providing for our family, but this came to a stand still when they both died after being attacked by a mysterious cattle disease. This deprived me of my financial freedom since then. I now fully depend on my spouse financially, which is the biggest hardship I face.
