"Yes, the new goal the I have is to boost my chicken grilling business. Currently, it has not been operating well due to the low capital to run it. The income that I earn as at now is $2.5 which is not enough to feed the family and also save for other basic needs. I intend to save the money from the business after boosting it to complete the construction of my 3 roomed house."

received a $25 second payment.
"When I got the tenth transfer, I used $8 to purchase two chickens so that I also start keeping because I had none. Since they have a short breeding period, I am optimistic about having several chickens soon. Thereafter, I saved the remaining $22 for commercial farming. I am waiting for the rainy season to plant some watermelons. I decided to do so because I tried it sometimes back and it did well hence I opted to take this investment route. I am happy that I can purchase watermelon seeds through the enablement of GiveDirectly."

"My granddaughter, Khadijah, who is currently in form three, was kicked out of school the day I received the cash transfers because she owed $140 in tuition. Being paralyzed, her father (my son) cannot take on strenuous tasks to actively support her education. This leaves her mother to shoulder the load of responsibilities of all four children, three of whom are in primary school. Previously, I would sell chickens to help raise Khadijah’s school fees until the entire flock was depleted. The cash transfer from Give Directly came at the perfect time. To relieve the burden, I gave her $20 to help reduce the school fee balance and she happily resumed her studies. I used the remaining money to purchase food for the family of twelve (two sons and their wives, and seven grandchildren) to boost the little that was left in stock. Having starved for two days earlier that month, I am glad the case has never repeated itself after the cash transfer, courtesy of Give Directly. "

Juliet
received a $25 second payment.
"Getting enough food to feed our current family of ten has been a challenge we have always overcome through a collaborative effort since we began receiving transfers from GiveDirectly. I am glad that the six of us who received the transfer within the family have been willing to contribute the same agreed-upon amount for the household goods. We each contributed $130 from the previous transfer, which we later spent on food that we are still using as we await the next transfer. I am also currently running a small poultry project with 15 birds. Buying them feed has also been difficult, but I am grateful for the occasional assistance I have received from my cousins who are scouting the same project and hope to invest in it in the future. I used the remaining funds to purchase a 50kg bag of chicken feed, which is currently $180. These supplements will help them improve their health, productivity, and growth."

received a second payment.
"I spent part of my recent transfer on buying two chickens at KES 1000. These will be the only assets that I can rely on in case of any financial constraints that I might encounter. I opted for them because they require little supervision and they will increase in number within a short period. I am therefore optimistic that I will achieve a lot through them. Additionally, I cleared my college fees and I enrolled recently pursuing a hairdressing course. I am happy and thankful to GiveDirectly for empowering me to accomplish one of my dreams. I believe that once I graduate, I will have enough skills to grab a job in the nearby saloons. I used the remaining cash to buy food and settled a debt of KES 500."

Fatuma
received a $25 second payment.
"I spent part of my recent transfer on buying two chickens at a total of KES 600. I had been yearning to at least own one for quite a long time but they were very expensive. I am now hopeful that once they multiply, I will be able to achieve a lot through them. To add to that, I cleared fees of KES 2200 for my daughter who is in her second year in high school. I am so thankful that the money came in good time because the exam was just around the corner and I was certain that she would miss it. Finally, I used the remaining amount of money to buy foodstuffs for my family and other household needs."

Bendera
received a $25 second payment.
"I spent part of my recent on paying school fees of KES 1500 for my three children who are in grades six, four and three respectively. They have always been sent home because of the financial hardship that I was undergoing, I could hardly settle the arrears on time. It is my pleasure to see them studying without any difficulties. I am hopeful that their future shall be brighter. To add to that, I have two chickens at KES 600 which I trust will multiply within a short period. I feel relieved because I have assets to lean on in case of any emergency. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuff and other household items like washing soap, and body oil."

Dzendere
received a second payment.
"My sole source of income three years ago was agriculture, which I relied significantly on. When the drought first appeared, it compelled me to burn down woods and sell charcoal. I'm now jobless and have a much less source of income due to the lack of rain. The money made from the sale of charcoal is not much, just enough to cover a day's worth of food. My son (Charo) has occasionally worked on odd jobs in Mombasa city (selling water and snacks) to aid me with my financial need. So when I got the second transfer, I made a special effort to purchase six chickens at a cost of $5 each. By investing money in chickens, I will soon have a solid alternative source of income. The number of chicks doubles over the next three months. I want to sell some and spend the money on valuable animals like goats."

"I spent part of my recent transfer on purchasing a piece of ironsheets at KES 700. I am planning to construct a new house in the next six months for my children since we now sleep under one roof. The house is relatively small and they are now grown up I feel it's high time they need privacy. Therefore the plan is to purchase materials every month and I am positive that I will achieve this. Later on, I bought chicken at KES 400 which I am now keeping in my household. I settled for it because I am certain that I will have many of them within a short time. Once they increase in number, I will be able to sell some and cater for household basic needs unlike before whereby I used to struggle a lot since I did not have a stable income. With the remaining amount of money, I decided to buy foodstuffs for my family which took us a week."
