How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, the new goal the I have is to boost my chicken grilling business. Currently, it has not been operating well due to the low capital to run it. The income that I earn as at now is $2.5 which is not enough to feed the family and also save for other basic needs. I intend to save the money from the business after boosting it to complete the construction of my 3 roomed house.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly did well in sending cash transfers directly to mobile phones. I am very grateful to be among the cash transfer program beneficiaries. Through the transfer, my life has greatly changed since I am about to fulfill the dream of owning a permanent house for the family. I do not see anything that the organisation did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had desired to own a decent permanent house for my family. I spent the recent transfer to start the construction since I had bought some of the required building materials with the first transfer. I used $252 of the most recent transfer to purchase 36 bags of cement. Half of the remaining amount assisted me in paying the labor costs for the construction of a 3-roomed permanent house for the family of 4 grandchildren and me. The house that we own the previous time was old, leaking and about to collapse since it had leaned towards the inside which was risky to our lives. Currently, I am happy to see the progress that I have made toward finalizing the construction, and I am looking forward to relocating to the new house. I also spent the $100 to purchase enough food for the family since we are experiencing drought and famine.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I saw an Mpesa message as I was going through my messages in the evening since my phone had been off. I was not expecting money from anyone and I was curious to know who could have sent me the money. When I read the contents of the message, I could not believe that GiveDirectly had sent the first transfer. I was greatly overjoyed and celebrated this blessing with my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I thank and appreciate GiveDirectly for enabling me to renovate my living house. It was mud-walled and temporary and my desire was to renovate it to a permanent one. I could not achieve this goal at my own cost since the materials required were beyond my financial capability. However, through the transfer. I managed to top up my savings and purchased enough building stones. Owning a permanent home gives me peace of mind and it's the biggest difference in my daily life so far.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had saved some money with an aim of renovating my living house to make it permanent. I am living in a mud-walled house and my plan was to rebuild it using stones to improve its stability. When I received my first transfer, I added the whole of it to my savings and purchased building stones to facilitate the renovation. I am grateful to GiveDirectly because it would have taken much longer to rebuild my house had I not received the transfer. I will no longer be worried in case it rains heavily because I was afraid that my mud-walled house would be swept away by the rain.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have my last born son who finished secondary school last year March and because I was having problem paying his school fees, the results are now held by the school administration. The fees due are 20000KES and I intend to clear the balance so that my son can collect his result. Immediately after that I will look for a college where he can pursue his career of his choice so that he can be depend himself.
What is the happiest part of your day?
One of my daughter bought me a pair of shoes last month. Very nice and colorful. I like them and I have to put them on everyday. I really feel loved.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I was left here with my three grandchildren with whom the mother is my daughter. I have responsibility to take care of them something that is very challenging considering my age. Food insecurity is my biggest problem now. Sometimes we lack food and the children have to go to school without eating. It has affected them mentally and the performances have deteriorated.
