"Currently my main challenge is staying together with my family. My casual job of being a security person does not give me humble time with my family. I usually spend the entire night outside home, and take time to sleep during the day. I would have wished that I start a different job that is flexible and can allow me to me to be with my family."

""Looking at the condition of my house, we uses thatch as zinc for the house so, during the rainy season when rain falls there's a lot of leaks from the roof. It is because there's no money to buy a zinc for proper roofing. So if I'm successful to receive this cash grant from givedirectly I'm going to build a house with a zinc roofing. And if there's a reaming I'm going to support my children in school.""

"It must have been around 6 p.m when I got the SMS confirming that I have received the money from GiveDirectly, but hadn't checked at the time because we were at a neighbor's mourning the loss of a loved one. So, I checked my phone moments later after I had gotten back to my house and confirmed the good news that I immediately shared with my husband that I had received the money. I felt so good when I got the money because I just couldn't believe that I got this much money. I felt so happy."

"Being left alone to care for our children with no stable source of income is my major challenge. I have a motorcycle that I use as a taxi to earn a living that I bought on loan. Repaying the loan is costly since it digs into the money, making it difficult for me to build a house and provide food and other needs for my two children."

"From the time I got married in 2017 ,we have struggled to buy milk for the family. As a motorcycle rider I have been unable to buy my own dairy cow.The motorcycle I ride belongs to a neighbor who pays me KES 200 a day .This amount is insufficient to meet the needs of my family especially now when my three children needs good clothing and adequate food for them to grow healthy. My children have consumed the non nutritional black tea several times due to my inability to buy milk. This pains me as a father because my wish has been to see my family happy."

"I had piped water that used to help me especially during drought where the community members would come and I sell to them. Selling water used to be my source of income, unfortunately, unrealistic water bills started coming that made me pause paying the charges. When I stopped paying the bills my meter was taken and now I have to find money to retrieve it so I can go back to business. Since the source of income was cut I had no choice but to depend on my husband who earn his living from riding a motorcycle. Receiving these transfers will enable me to clear the water bill of 7,650 KES and then buy a water tank that will cost around 30,000 KES for storing water in case we ran out of water in the taps. I will then save the rest of the money as I plan with my husband on the next investment."

"I am a motorcycle rider where I make 600 KES daily which is not bad considering that I live in the village. However, there has been tight competition because many young people are currently venturing into the business and this hurts my daily income. The current situation of too much competition and a bad economy has made it challenging to earn a living."
