"I am a mother of eight children all in both secondary and primary schools. It has always been my ambition to give them a good education to help have a better life in the future but raising their fee has been too challenging for me since I rely on low paying and hardly found casual jobs. It had been a routine for them to be sent home every now then since I had no time ever cleared their school fees. This was devastating and discouraging made my children drop in their performance. The biggest difference in my daily ever since I received my transfer from GiveDirectly is being able to settle my children's school fees. I feel so happy to see my children in school studying hard knowing that they will improve in their performance and eventually pass their exams."

"Since the demise of my husband almost 11 years ago, I have been living a life of sorrow because even owning a house has been a challenge to me. This has forced me and my daughter to seek refuge from my mother-in-law's house but likely enough, one of our relatives offered me the support of 22 pieces of iron sheets to construct a separate structure for myself and pay him later once lucky comes on my favor. I am proud to learn that the arrival of GiveDirectly means a better life to me since I will be able to sort the debt of Ksh 13,200 for the iron sheets and this will give me the confidence of owning my house. On the other hand, I plan to invest in livestock rearing in order to help me in paying school fees for my daughter when she advances her studies to secondary. To accomplish this, I intend to use 580 dollars to buy 10 goats at $30 each and 2 indigenous dairy cows at $140 each. This will change my livelihood for the better and hence, a transformation that I have ever wished."

"Raising a family single handedly and being unemployed has been the biggest hardship I have faced in life. I have 2 school going children and both are in primary school yet their fees is costly. I pay approximately 300 USD per year as school fees for both children yet I rely on casual labour to meet the school and family's expenses. I normally work within the village and in different places as a casual laborer which is hard to come by and when I get a job, I am paid between 1 and 2 USD a day. As such, the income I get is hardly enough to fend for the entire family."

"I am an ambitious father always struggling to bring up a happy family. I majorly depend on farming to support my family needs and it is challenging to meet needs with the deadline like school fees since farming takes time to mature and the returns are unpredictable. I priorities my children's education to help them have a better future thus my attention is always on their school fees. The greatest change in my daily life since I received my transfer is the ability to settle their fee on time giving me a chance to focus on other income-generating activities as they have ample time in school to study. I thank GiveDirectly for the support."

"The biggest difference in my daily life in the last four months preceding the current transfer is that I built t better and spacious house for my family. We used to live in a small mud house before which could not host all of us confortably. I depend on the small retail shop to get money. The profits from this business were not enough to meet all the basic needs including paying school fees for the children and building a new house. I am so happy now because I have a decent house and I no longer shy off to welcome visitors."

"I had a huge secondary school fees arrears that my parents could not clear before I did my final examinations. The principal allowed me to take my final examinations but I could not access my certificates without clearing the balance I had. After school, I started helping my parents to go for casual work to raise money to help clear the balance I had in school. It was four months after my final examinations but still, we were not able to clear the balance. When we started getting our monthly transfers, we combined on a monthly basis to pay for the arrears. I am glad we have cleared the arrears and I now have my certificates."
