Esther
received a $485 second payment.
"My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have paid school fees for my grandchildren. I have three grandchildren who are in secondary school. Their mother passed on and I was left with the responsibility of taking care of them. I depend on small scale farming. I plant beans and vegetables. I sell this produce at the market and earn an income to pay the school fees. Sometimes I take this produce to school as a form of paying the school fees. My grandchildren sometimes are sent home for school fees. Due to the fact that I did not have ready cash they could stay home for quite some time and this was affecting their performance. This was making me worried. When I received the second transfer I decided to pay school fees for this academic year. They were not sent home this time. They were able to study weell and improve in their performance. I have enough time to save some money for next academic term. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled me to educate my grandchildren and I also have peace of mind to do my daily activities at home."

"I spent KES 40,000 of the second transfer on purchasing building materials which includes cement, sand and dust. I cemented the floor and renovated the walls of my house to look better and decent. I used to live in a mud floor house. I also used KES 5,000 on school fees for my granddaughter who is in secondary school. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed my living standard."

"My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I was able to pay school fees for my children in various schools. I spent KES 35,000 for my children in secondary school. This gave me peace of mind because I knew my children will not be sent home to collect the school fees. I do my chores peacefully and ensure that I save some money to pay for the next academic term. My children used to be sent home and this was affecting their performance. I depend on small scale farming and I was not in a position to pay school fees on time. My children were so demoralized because they could spent more time at home. I didn't had money to pay immediately whenever they are sent. This was affecting their performance. Currently I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled me to educate my children and ensure that their future bright."

Regina
received a $502 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a heifer. I buy milk daily from my neighbor and this is so costly for me. I had always wished to own a dairy cow but I didn't had money to buy. I depend on small scale farming and casual jobs in the village. The amount of money that I get through this is so small. I do struggle to meet the basic household items and buying a heifer was not even in my list. When I received the transfer we decided to purchase a heifer and pay school fees for our children. I have hope that when my dairy cow reproduce in the next few months I will get enough milk for my family. I will cut the daily cost of buying milk and save the money that I could have used to buy other basic needs. I will also sell the surplus milk to earn an income to pay the school fees for my children. Currently I do my work with peace of mind and hope that I will be able to earn an income soon. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled me to own a dairy cow. This could have taken quite some time to get it."

"My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have started goats rearing project. I depend on casual jobs in the village and also small scale farming at home, the harvest that I get through this is only for consumption. I had always wished to start this project but I didn't had money. The small amount of money that I get through this casual jobs is only for other basic household needs . When I received the second transfer I decided to invest on goats rearing project. I bought three goats for a start. The reason why I like this project is that goats reproduce twice per year. I will sell them to buy a dairy cow in the near future. I will also paid school fees for my children in various schools. Pay NHIF easly without much struggle. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has enabled us to own livestock which could have taken quite some time."

"My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have paid school fees for my son who was joining form one. I paid for one academic year in full. I am so happy because this will enable my son to study well without being sent home to collect the school fees. I will also have time to save some money to pay for the following academic year. I depend on small scale farming and sometimes I sell maize at the market. This small business earn me KES 200 profits per day. Due to recurrent needs at home I rarely save some money. We have started merry go round group that we save some money on monthly basis. I will ensure that I save some money monthly to enable me pay the school fees. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled me to educate my son and given me hope to ensure that my son complete his studies."

"My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have paid school fees for my son who was joining form one. I depend on casual jobs in the village, the amount of money that I get through this casual jobs is so small and cannot meet all the basic needs. I run a grocery store, This earns me a profits of KES 300 per day. I have needs at home which I spent all this money. Saving is not easy because of the recurrent needs. I didn't know how to raise the school fees. When I received the second transfer I found it Worth to start by paying all the fees for that term. My son now is studying well in school. This has given me peace of mind to work hard and ensure that I save some money to pay for next academic term. GiveDirectly has enabled me to educate my son and to start embracing the saving culture. This will ensure I pay school fees for my son until he clears the secondary school."
