"It was around 11:30pm ,That was when my husband come back home. He had taken our neighbor who was unwell to the hospital for treatment. I woke up and open the door for him. I just decided to check my phone. I saw a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I couldn't believe my eyes, I felt so happy and immediately informed my spouse. Who also checked it. It was one of the best nights. We were so happy and grateful. We knew our plans would be fulfilled. We slept well and on the next day we went to withdraw the money and used some to repay for the motorcycle that we had purchased on hire purchase. We are so grateful for the support."

"I have many things that I would wish to achieve in life but the unavailability of money has made my dreams not come true. One of the things that I have always wanted to do is build a good house for my family since the one that I currently live in is small and in a very bad state. I also have a motorcycle business that I am currently running but it is not giving me much because I took it on a loan where I am required to pay 2668 KES every week. These transfers will enable me to clear the remaining loan balance of 45,356 KES and build a house, however, the monthly transfers will not be enough to achieve all these. My plans, therefore, are not to save for five consecutive months and start buying livestock for rearing and sell at a profit when they start multiplying."

"My husband is a commercial motorcycle rider. I have not been working or doing anything to help with our upkeep. Things got a bit difficult for us. We moved in to live with my sister in law. My goal has been to buy a new motorcycle and do business. I have not been able to achieve that because of the lack of money. I was so excited when GiveDirectly came to my town with it's cash program. I was overwhelmed when I received my transfer. With this program I know my life will improve for the better."

""When I receive the money, I want to get involve with small business, that's to increase the one that I'm already doing. This is because the little business that I'm doing is not large enough to sustain my family, I will also buy motorcycle as a means transporting my goods"."

received a $484 initial payment.
"The biggest difference is that through the cash transfer, I was able to purchase goats. It has always been my dream to keep them but because of my financial status, I couldn't afford to purchase even one. I opted for goats because they mature very fast and reproduce twice a year. Also, as compared to other domestic animals they require minimal supervision. I plan that once they reproduce and increase in number, I will be selling the offspring and catering to all household needs, and save the remaining cash for my children's education. Currently, my children are still in primary schools and by the time they will be transitioning to secondary schools or even colleges I would have saved a lot to fund their schooling. My biggest challenge has been the issue of fees since my spouse is the breadwinner with a low income, it hasn't been easy even for our daily needs. I am now hopeful and happier that all my children will get a better education hence a brighter future and that of their generations courtesy of GiveDirectly. Also, I will no longer have to strain like before in making the ends meet."

"My main challenge is lack of job opportunities here in the village. I was once employed in Mombasa as a shop attendant for one year, but things didn't work out. We disagreed over payment when I asked for a raise on top of 3000 KES I was earning. This is when I decided to came home about two years ago to look for some other things to do. I haven't been lucky so far just riding a motorcycle taxi which earns me about 200 KES a day after paying the bike's owner."
