"I am a mother of eight children. My husband works in a different town as a casual laborer. He normally supplies bread to shops. On the day when I received these funds, my children were very hungry and I did not know where I would get food. My poultry-keeping business was also not performing well and I needed to buy more chicken to boost it. The profit I get from it helps me when it comes to paying my children's school fees. So, there is a great difference after I started receiving this money. I was able to buy some nourishments for my children. Even though I was unable to buy chicken, I believe with my next transfer, I will be able to add my stock and improve my business."

"My parents were supportive of my education, unfortunately, they passed away. So, when I finished my form 4 in 2009, I never got the means to continue with my studies. It was my plan to take up a course in electricals. Since this never got to work out, I started working as a handyman at a construction site to support myself. When I was introduced to the give directly program, all I saw was an opportunity. I, therefore, came up with the idea of starting a poultry farming business. From its profits, I will be able to continue with my studies. With that in mind, I used the funds to buy 4 chickens. The amount that remained I used to buy some maize flour now that there is a scarcity of food due to the droughts in my area."

"I recently started a small business where I sell fish(omena) by the roadside. I used a capital of KES 200. This I did after I had put my poultry farming business plan on hold. I had intended to use the money I received from give directly to buy 4 chickens. With the objective of supporting my husband with some of the bills. Especially, our five children's school fees. Unfortunately, the following day, my celebratory mood changed to a somber one. I had lost my brother-in-law. So, with visitors streaming in to bid him goodbye, there was a need to purchase some food. I, therefore, decided to make my contributions using the funds I got."

"I am a housewife who has been relying on burning charcoal for sale as a way to supplement my household income. Early last year, I had some pregnancy related complication that subjected me to undergo surgical operations. As a result, I am nowadays unable to engage in vigorous activity. When I received my transfer, I spent KES 670 on buying maize flour and vegetables for my family of three. I am planning to spend the remaining KES 500 on buying a chicken which I shall raise and use later."

"I wanted to start a chicken rearing business. I erected a structure that I have never been able to finish due to financial constraints. I will use my transfers to finish the structure. The remaining work will cost me around 15,000 KES. I will also spend 30,000 KES to renovate my house which has a leaking roof and weak poles. I will replace the leaking roof and reinforce the walls with pillars for its durability. The rest of the funds will support my household with food and other needs."

"I have a poultry business at my compound(Rearing local chicken, turkeys, and guinea fowls). The structure housing the birds is little with leaking iron sheets. I will use 50,000 KES of my transfer to construct a spacious structure( pay for labor and building materials including poles, iron sheets, nails, and wire mesh) for my poultry animals and also purchase more birds."

"Since I started receiving the funds, there has been a great difference in my life. I am now able to revive my poultry business which had collapsed after two of my chickens died. I then bought two more (a roster and a hen) using the funds. This brings the total number to 3 chickens. I will keep buying more every time I receive the transfers until I have at least 10. These funds will also help in supporting my studies as a teacher."

"I spent part of my first transfer on buying a mattress and a bed at KES 17000. Initially, I used to sleep on the traditional beds and sometimes on the floor where I used to experience lots of pain. Also, I bought six bags of cement at KES 4200, and two wooden windows at KES 16000. I had intended to renovate my son's house which was not in a good state and almost collapsed. In addition, I bought four chickens at a total of KES 1200 and four goats. These have been my well thoughtful assets but I could not afford to purchase them using my cash. Later on, I bought a solar panel which has been of help, especially at night, and charging our phones and those of my neighbors at a fee. With the remaining amount, I bought foodstuffs for my family and other household items."
