received a $499 initial payment.
"I spent part of my first transfer on buying fifteen pieces of iron sheets at KES 19000, nails, and timber at KES 2000. This was for the renovation of my house since it had an old roof that could leak terribly during the rainy seasons. I also bought two mattresses at KES 6400 which were to replace the old mats which were using as beddings for a couple of years. we could always of back pains and fatigues and I am glad this is now history. In addition to that, I am planning to buy goats which will serve as the assets that I can lean on in case of any financial crisis. I then cleared school fees of KES 5000 for my six children who are in primary schools. They are currently studying peacefully with minimal disturbances. With the remaining amount of money, I am using it to buy enough food for my family."

"If I receive the transfer, I intend to pay my children school fees. Our children had never been to school before besides the home study I provide them each day for one hour. Our children education is our major concern right now."

Zainab
received a $499 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my life so far that I will always mention is the fact that I managed to construct a permanent rental house. This has always been my wish since I already had a plot that I inherited from my dad but then I didn't have the resources to develop it. I have been jobless ever since I got married and life has never been easy since I only depended on my spouse for the family's basic needs. My spouse relies on temporary casual labor which earns him KES 800 a day, but this is never guaranteed. With the little income we make, we could not meet the school fees required and this led to my children being sent home quite regularly for non-payment of school fees. There are also times that we had to skip meals because of little or no money to buy food. Because of all these, I had to think of a way to get an income to supplement what my spouse gets. I am glad that the rentals I put up are ready for use and I will soon start earning and hopefully I have good returns from it. Thanks to GiveDirectly for the finances which have empowered me as an entrepreneur now. I will never strain in paying school fees for the two children and meeting other household expenses."

Agnes
received a $499 initial payment.
"I do not know how to read and write and as I was going on with my daily activities, most of my neighbors were so happy while claiming that they had received their promised money from GiveDirectly. I waited patiently till lunch hour when my helper arrived and I requested him to help me check my Mpesa balance and after a few minutes, he confirmed to me that the money was already in my account. My heart was immediately filled with joy as I knew that this money would enable me to accomplish so much including paying school fees for my children."

Alice
received a $499 initial payment.
"Paying school fees for my children has been an uphill task to me. I depend on subsistence farming and I majorly plant onions that I can later sell to people at a retail price. The money I usually get is not enough to pay school fees for my children and still set aside some to use in meeting our daily basic needs. Due to this, I am at times forced to take loans and my children are constantly out of school due to fees arrears. Despite all this challanges, my son was able to complete his secondary school education, passed well and my biggest worry was how I would be able to clear his fee arrears for him to be given his certificate that was needed when joining a tertiary institution. My transfers came in handy as it enabled me to not only pay for his college fee but to also clear his fee arrears. This, I can testify that is the biggest difference in my daily life as I now live a stress free life knowing that he is in school continuing well with his studies."

"If I am lucky to receive money from Givedirectly, I intend to start a business. Because presently, our only livelihood for survival is to pick kiss-meat to sell. At times, I have to engaged in casual labor work -that is going to help pick char-coal for people who burn coal to survive. The business will provide us money to pay for our children school fees and us. None of our children are in school because we don't have money. I'm very grateful for Givedirectly coming to our town today."
