"Receiving this money means hope to me. I am a family man married to two wives with ten children. For the past five years I have not been able to work due to health challenges. I was diagnosed with pneumonia and this has affected my ability to move around or even take care of myself. I have no income, my wives have to work inorder to feed the family. We live in a one roomed house, little space with no privacy. My priority is to build a four roomed house where both my wives can have their own rooms and my children their own.
My children are constantly sent home for lack of tuition money and they have to stay back home for days before we can get money to send the back to school. Part of the transfer will be channelled to school fees as I construct a better and more spacious house."

"This money will be of great significance to, I plan to take a loan of about ksh 30,000 with Silk, a Sacco I bank with. I will use the money to open a small shop selling household goods, once I start receiving transfers from Give Directly, I will be clearing the loan slowly.
I will later still take another loan to assist with paying school fees for my six children. Two of them are in College, two in high school and two in primary school."

"Financial challenges have become part of me since I do not have a stable source of income. Subsistence farming cannot be relied upon because of unpredictable rainfall patterns. It is therefore a problem to provide food and school fees for my children. My wife who works as a house help takes care of almost everything and it embarrasses me as a man."

"It will significantly change my life. I plan to finish constructing my house, one side is yet to be completed.I am a maize miller and business has not been doing so well. This season farmers have not been able to plant due to the change in climate, this has significantly brought down my income. Previously, I would channel most of my resources to building the house and still cater to my family's needs, but now things are not the same.
I intend also to clear my children's school fees balance which is about Ksh400. I wish to settle the balance before schools close so that as they reopen they can attend classes without been sent home."

"It will bring alot happiness to my life, I am physically challenged with one part of my body paralyzed. It is difficult for me to walk let alone work.
I depend on my son for support. He lives in mombasa and comes home once a month to bring me food and other household items, he also pays school fees for his younger sister and I fell it weighs alot on him. He has a lot of responsibilities and I want to lift this burden off him and support myself. I intend to buy food with this money and support my young daughter through school."

"This money comes to me as a gift from Give Directly. In the frican culture, gifts are really treasured, therefore, I will use it to cater for some basic needs like food and school fees for my children.
As I cater for those, I intend to save 1,500 KES every month for 5 months to raise money towards a green grocery and coconut selling business as I channel the remaining 1,500 KES to other needs. I feel really honored to be receiving these funds."

"My husband works very hard in Nairobi to provide for me and our 4 children. I would not complain that he doesn't provide financially.
With these transfers from Give Directly, I will be able to at least help in buying clothes for myself and our children as well as contribute some towards buying food so that he can focus on developing our house and paying school fees for the children."

"Seeing that my husband is the sole breadwinner at the moment, I intend to use these transfers from Give Directly to take care of our food situation at home so that my husband takes care of our children's school fees and transport. I feel like the financial burden will be lesser on my husband who works as a driver in Mombasa and this will improve our quality of life as a family."

received a $498 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly for me. I depend on small scale farming and the harvest that we usually get is so small. I had no surplus harvest to sell to earn an income. My spouse does casual jobs and the money that he gets is for household needs including paying school fees for my children. We had no savings to purchase a dairy cow. My children could missed to have milk whenever there was no money completely to buy. This was so demoralizing and stressful. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy because this was the only opportunity to invest on dairy cow. We decided with my spouse and went to purchase a dairy cow together. Currently we have enough milk for my family and even sell the surplus milk to earn an income to meet other household items and save some in merry go round group that we have started. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards."
