What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The drought has increased water scarcity in my village, which makes us walk for hours to find a water source. So I used most of my transfer to pay a motorcyclist to deliver water from the pond. Collectively, I used KES 2700 on food and water alone. The rest of the money, KES 300, went towards my child’s school fees.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The biggest challenge faced in my area is climate changes which have caused some places to become drier and prone to drought. When I received my first transfer all I could think of was water and it was 6 jerricans of 20ltrs for the price of Kes 200.I have 4 children and in a day i can use more than 6 jerricans hence spent all my transfer on water. The second transfer of kes 2000 was spent on water and daily consumption of vegetables and bought clothes for kes 950.My recent transfer was spent on buying vegetables because with the drought vegetables are expensive and they constitutes dominant portion of a standard diet.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in terms of dealing with us recipients directly. This is a good move in that every needy is assured of getting the help. We have been in a scenario before where I was registered by another group to receive aid but I was never helped. I am now happy that I was enrolled in the program and I can say this because GiveDirectly deals directly with the recipient.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The drought situation in our area has made our life a living hell. I was very fortunate to buy maize in the past and I am still using it as food together with my family. The main challenge that I have currently been facing is getting water together with my family. The only option we have currently is to buy water from the vendors who sell a 20-liter jerrican at 60 to 100 bob. My family is big and we use water a lot. We also use some of the water to give our animals. When I received the money I spent KSH 2000 in purchasing water. I also used the remaining KSH 1000 in buying some foodstuffs for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the text message that I had received the money in the morning hours. I was in preparation to go look for water far away from my home. So when I saw the text message I became very happy because I knew it was going to help me in a very good way.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The money has made a big difference in my life. I have a small kid and carrying your small kid at the back, walking more than 50 kilometers in search of water is something very hectic. Sometimes you can walk all these kilometers and end up not getting water nor food to eat. The money has eased my problems in many ways. I bought water that I use and I no longer walk those long distances in search of water. I also bought food which I am eating together with my family. The money has eased a lot of burdens from my side I am very grateful for that.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I received KSH 3000 from GiveDirectly. In my area, we are experiencing the worst drought in years. My priority when I first received was ensuring that I had enough water for my family. Finding water is a hectic activity. I have to walk for more than 50 kilometers in search of water. The water we get is from the borehole which is sometimes not safe for drinking and also cooking. Since we do not have any other means we use the same water in doing everything in my home. When I received the cash I spent KSH 1500 in buying fresh water for my family. I also spent KSH 1500 buying food for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My husband works very hard in Nairobi to provide for me and our 4 children. I would not complain that he doesn't provide financially.
With these transfers from Give Directly, I will be able to at least help in buying clothes for myself and our children as well as contribute some towards buying food so that he can focus on developing our house and paying school fees for the children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Apart from feeling sickly even after medication, I feel so happy about my family.
I am especially happy when I get to visit my husband in Nairobi or have him visit us every so often. I am grateful for my loving family and the fact that I share a compound with my in-laws makes me even happier because we coexist happily. The rest are healthy and in good spirits most of the time.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been unwell for the past two weeks and although I have sought medical help, I don't seem to get better. I intend to seek a second opinion this week. I hope that we will find the illness and treat it so that I can continue taking care of my children without feeling weak.
