"My current challenge is lack of sufficient money to support my family's basic needs. I burn charcoal for a living where I occasionally make 500 KES while my husband on the other hand is involved in the motorcycle business. His income varies depending on the demand and this makes it hard to depend on him fully. Both our sources of survival are not consistent which sometimes makes it hard for us to have three meals per day. As a mother and the planner of our finances, I resorted to having a meal in a day so that we can also leave some for the next day. This is sometimes frustrating and stressful for me to handle."

"The motorcycle which is my main source of income got broke down more than two weeks ago. The broken parts are quite expensive and being that it has been my only source of income, raising enough money to repair it is a challenge. Therefore, I have an additional goal to look for ways of repairing it so that I can get back to work. Currently, I am using someone's motorcycle in order to raise money for repairing the bike."

"My dream has been to start a boutique enterprise but lack of capital has been my biggest challenge. With this money, I see light at the end of the tunnel. I will plan KES 30000 to kick start this business. This will boost my family income and thus we will have a better life. Milk is in high demand in our region. This makes me have the feeling of producing milk for sale and tap more income for my family. I will therefore plan KES 40000 to buy a dairy cow. With the remaining money, I will buy food and clothes for my family member."

"My firstborn daughter is a form one at Roborwo Secondary School and the second born will also join form one in May this year. Raising their school fees is not easy for a motorbike taxi rider like me. I desire to give my children the best education because I know it is the only way to their bright future. As a motorbike rider, I get KES 400-500 per day and I spend all of it in buying food for my family. When my firstborn was joining form one, villagers did a fundraising and I do not think they will do the same for my second born. I am happy that I have been enrolled and part of my transfer will be spent on paying school fees for my children. Receiving this transfer will enable my daughter to seamlessly transition from primary to secondary school."

"The one bedroom house I am living in with my wife is in pathetic condition and unsafe for anyone to sleep inside. The situation worsens whenever it rains because the roof leaks and the wall are falling off. It has been a hell of an experience residing in it with spouse since I got married one year ago. Receiving this money would mean I build a new spacious 2 bedroom house which will cost 35000 KES. I will also buy a bed and mattress for 12000 KES because currently we do not have one.
As a motorcycle rider, my bike is also not in good condition and I solely depend on it so I plan to set aside 10000 KES to acquire a new motorbike on higher purchase which I believe will go along way in providing my family with basic needs such as food."

"I graduated from Kenya Medical Training college last year where I did nursing. I have been working as a substitute nurse in a nearby health facility. My job is not consistent since I am called upon when there is a shortage in the facility. My pay, however, is KES 750 per day and it is not guaranteed that I will get the job for an entire week sometimes it is once a week. My pay is insufficient to meet all my household needs like purchasing food. So when I receive this transfer I will spend my entire transfer of KES 110000 to open my clinic in the nearby town. This clinic will be my source of income and I am glad that I will be self-employed."

"With my second transfer, I opted to spend Kshs.30,000 in building a spacious kitchen since we didn't have one. We recently completed the house and looking forward to start using it. I can now run my business peacefully. With the remaining amount, I used to pay for labor for the construction of the kitchen. I am grateful to Give directly for giving me a chance to improve on my standards of living."

"It has always been our dream to own a retail shop and restaurant in our locality one day so that we can operate it. I am happy that we were able to acquire a motorcycle using our recent transfer and we are planning to be saving part of our daily income and later take a loan and use it to achieve our goal. For the past month that my spouse has been offering taxi business using the motorcycle, he has been earning at least 1000 a day and since we are still young family, I am hopeful that we will achieve our aim very soon."

"The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is that there are developments that couldn't happen before. I was able to get the materials that are to be used to build me a better and proper house, as well as got a motorcycle that is our regular source of income which apart from helping us meet our family's daily immediate needs also helps us with household chores and activities like fetching water. All that could only happen through the assistance I received from GiveDirectly, I am so grateful."
