How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to revive a kiosk that had closed down before reason being I did not have enough funds to restock. During the day, I would go and look for manual jobs and in the evening would sell in the kiosk so that I can cater to my family's basic needs but it was still a struggle. I look forward to restocking it and working full time so that I can be able to meet most of my family's needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly does well by improving the living standards of every homestead in my village, and also the adequate advice that we got from Givedirectly officers was of great help after receiving the cash transfer. I do not see anything Givedirectly doesn't do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the second transfer, I managed to obtain a heifer worth KES 25000 to add to what we had. Initially, we had been struggling to purchase milk from our neighborhood which to me it was a bit expensive. I have three kids in primary so I was able to pay the amount of KES 900 for their fees to avoid being sent home for the money. I went ahead also and purchased three sacks of maize worth KES 10500 which has sustained us for about four months now and also avoid buying in small quantities. Lastly, with the remaining amount I purchased clothes for my family which at least made everyone happy for the great work that Give Directly has done for us.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home digging some holes in preparation for planting trees in my compound when I heard my phone vibrating in my pocket. To my surprise when I checked my phone, the message I saw was a Mpesa notification confirming that I had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. Words cannot express how grateful and happy I was to have received the good news that morning. I informed my wife and children who were equally happy, we knew that finally, we would be able to construct a decent kitchen and buy school uniforms with the funds that we had received. We are grateful as a family to have received the transfer at the time of need.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My children used to wear home clothes when going to school. Being made a laughing stock by their peers had demoralized them and you rarely found them playing with other kids as they always felt inferior. With the transfer, I was able to buy them new school uniforms and also purchased one sack of maize for our consumption. Currently, they are always cheerful since apart from feeling that they're part of other students in school, they also eat well. This has always made them eager to go to school as they can freely mingle with their peers without being discriminated. Seeing them happy and always in a cheerful mode is the biggest difference in my life as it has also made me feel happy and satisfied as I struggle to always meet their needs as a parent.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my transfer, I spent KES 20000 to build a kitchen for my family and KES 25000 to purchase a heifer. Dairy cows are beneficial to people as they are a source of wealth and pride in our community. Due to this, I decided to purchase one using the transfer as an addition to the one I already had. I will be selling milk to my neighbors when they reproduce and use the money in paying school fees for my children. Preparing meals during the rainy season has been a difficult task for my spouse due to the leaking roof as it was grass-thatched and old. Because of this, we would at times take our meals late at night whenever it rains as it would be impossible to cook since the rainwater would extinguish the fire. I am glad since we're almost completing building an iron-roofed kitchen that will enable her to cook at anytime. In addition to this, I spent KES 2000 to buy new school uniforms for my children as they did not have and spent KES 4000 on home clothes for my family members after buying one sack of maize for our consumption at KES 3000.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My grass thatched kitchen is in a deplorable condition. It leaks in water during rainy seasons and what worsens the situation is the shame of hosting my visitors in it since I have no alternative. Receiving this money will therefore revive my self image. I plan to use $350 of my transfer to build a two roomed house, one room to serve as a kitchen and the other to serve as visitors room. I will then use $350 to buy a cow who's daily earnings from selling milk will supplement my motorcycle taxi business wages. I also plan to use the remaining $300 to initiate a poultry keeping project for my spouse who has been aspiring to be financially independent so as to support me in providing for our family
What is the happiest part of your day?
My job as a motorbike taxi rider entails ferrying my clients and other goods to various destinations for pay. My greatest daily worry is whether I will get clients who will enable me to get enough money to buy food for my family at the end of the day. I count success every evening whenever I meet my set goals for the day hence evening is the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I face in life is the inability to progress well development-wise like my peers around. I am a motorcycle taxi rider earning $2 to $3 daily and this amount is only enough to provide food for my family. My wife has been complaining daily of a leaking kitchen roof that destructs her in the kitchen while cooking since it rains in, thus putting off fire now and then yet I am helpless and unable to build a new one. I have many projects to do in mind, for instance starting a business for my spouse so as to empower her but lack of resources has made this hard to achieve.
