Yegon
received a $467 second payment.
"Fours year before GiveDirectly, I had borrowed a loan to start an MPesa business and shop business. Since then I have been repaying it at a monthly installment of KES 10,500. To repay it I have been working as a motorcycle taxi where I get KES 300 a day and approximately KES 8,000 a month. This I would top-up and repay the loan.
Luckily, when I received my second transfer I was able to repay the whole loan amount of KES 28,000. Since then I am a very happy man because I now make more profits in my business unlike before when I was repaying the loan.
Secondly, I spent KES 15,000 of the transfers on clearance of our high school fees arrears. This is because we are fourth-form graduates and would like to further our studies to get decent jobs.
In addition, I also spent KES 16,000 on roofing and doing finishing for my shop which had stalled. This is because I have been renting a shop at KES 1,500. This will not only do away with renting expenses but also increase profits. I also spent KES 5000 on food and other household items."

Philimon
received a $483 initial payment.
"When I received my transfer, I spent KES 30000 building a more spacious house for my family. I decided on this so that my children will have their own bedroom when they grow. Building a more spacious house had been my desire but I had not been able to since I usually spend all the money that I get paid by my neighbor for offering taxi services using his motorcycle on food. Also, I spent KES 11000 to clear school fee arrears for my spouse so that she would be given her secondary school certificate. I used the remaining amount on food and clothes for the family."

"I work as a motorcycle rider and I hire bikes to work with every day for 300 KES as hiring few which I submit to the motorcycle owner everyday. This has always been the trend but I thank God because the story will change, I intend to buy a new motorbike for my job. I have always dreamed of self-employment and this is the chance. With the remaining amount, I will renovate my house with concrete pillars to make it firm to withhold strong winds and heavy rains."

Chepkemoi
received a $482 initial payment.
"We usually face a challenge of looking for clean water for domestic use, especially during the dry season where one has to walk for 2 hrs daily looking for drinking water. Since I am a BOM teacher, I would not get enough time to go to the river and I used to source the services of a motorcycle rider. They would always charge me a fee of KES 100 for 80 liters of water. When I received my transfer, I spent KES 32000 to purchase a water tank with a capacity of 5000 liters, spent KES 9000 on the gutters, to construct its stand, and to pay for the labor of erecting it. We will be using it to harvest rainwater for drinking and making meals so that I will always save the money that I would otherwise pay a motorcycle rider to help me in fetching water from the well. We spent the remaining amount on food and clothes for my two children and spouse."

Festus
received a $482 initial payment.
"I was employed to offer taxi services using a motorcycle belonging to one of my neighbors and I earn KES 300 daily. I usually spend all this to provide basic needs for my family of three and the purchase of milk and maize flour usually takes a huge junk of this money. With the transfer, I purchased two heifers at KES 45000 and used the remaining amount on food and other household necessities. These are an investment to me that I can rely on in case of emergencies and in paying school fees for my children. In addition, I will be able to save the money that I would other use in buying milk when it calves."

"Receiving this money means that I will buy a dairy cow to acquire a source of income. Selling milk will give me about KES 120 per day. This will enable me to meet my daily household needs like food and personal care items. I also hope to start a new business, selling maize in a nearby market. This will further generate income as I will make a profit of about KES 3600 per week."

Joyce
received a $466 second payment.
"My husband had been working as a hired rider that used to give him an inconsistent income ranging from KES 100 to KES 300 on a good day. Mid last year, we opted to obtain a motorcycle, and even though it was on loan, we had been able to make consistent installments to the company that gave it to us. On receiving the first and the second transfer, we felt it was a good time to clear the debt so that we can start operating and making savings for our household from its daily proceeds. Out of the second transfer, I paid a total of KES 24000 to clear the debt that was still pending, obtained a valid number plate, and is now fully in operation run and managed by my husband. It was also a great time for my household in that the second transfer came just some weeks before my delivery. I was lucky that the government was able to cover most of the maternity cost and had to only spend KES 10000 on the weekly check-ups that I had to attend. I later bought a sack of dry maize grains that we used as foodstuffs with my family of three, bought two water containers at KES 1500 each that have been helpful in water reservation for the household use and the frequent laundry I had been doing, and spent the remaining amount on the clothing for my newborn baby and emergencies during that time when I could do nothing on my own."

"A year ago I purchased a piece of land worth KES 40,000 but I cannot do any farming activities because it is small. I do not save any money from KES 300 that I earn daily from motorcycle taxis. Receiving this money will actualize my desire of expanding my land. I am planning to use KES 80,000 to purchase 2 points of land and for the rest, I will buy a dairy cow since there will be enough grazing fields."

"Lack of employment is the current challenge I am facing. I used to work as a motorcyclist in 2021 and the owner sold his motorcycle rendering me jobless. Since then, it has been very hard to access another opportunity."
