How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I and my wife am planning to go back to school and further my studies. This is because we have our high school certificates that were held up due to school fees arrears but GiveDirectly transfers bailed us out.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly is fair because every eligible household in our village was enrolled.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Fours year before GiveDirectly, I had borrowed a loan to start an MPesa business and shop business. Since then I have been repaying it at a monthly installment of KES 10,500. To repay it I have been working as a motorcycle taxi where I get KES 300 a day and approximately KES 8,000 a month. This I would top-up and repay the loan. Luckily, when I received my second transfer I was able to repay the whole loan amount of KES 28,000. Since then I am a very happy man because I now make more profits in my business unlike before when I was repaying the loan. Secondly, I spent KES 15,000 of the transfers on clearance of our high school fees arrears. This is because we are fourth-form graduates and would like to further our studies to get decent jobs. In addition, I also spent KES 16,000 on roofing and doing finishing for my shop which had stalled. This is because I have been renting a shop at KES 1,500. This will not only do away with renting expenses but also increase profits. I also spent KES 5000 on food and other household items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9:30 am at my shop when I received a message on my phone that confirmed the receipt of the first transfer. It wasn't a surprise for me since I had been expecting it and came within the range of dates given during enrollment. I felt good as we had been making plans on how best we will spend with my family, and had to immediately call my wife who was back at home. We managed to finalize the arrangement later that evening and had to withdraw the money on the following day before making my first purchase.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life after receiving the first transfer is the improved living standard after obtaining a lactating cow to add to the bullock and the heifer that we initially had. We are now enjoying enough milk supply unlike before when we could buy the little we could afford then, and even obtaining on credit whenever we had no money. I am grateful to GiveDirectly that has turned things around in our household and also in other households around.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With my family of three, I had been working so hard alongside my spouse to ensure that we don't miss our daily bread. Even though we had been trying several businesses that I am grateful for for the far they have provided us with other household needs that have been hard to consistently provide. We could forego some at some point but buying milk had been so hard to skip as we now have a young kid who needs milk every day. Buying from the neighborhood had been so expensive that we decided to buy a heifer some months ago and a Bullock to rear alongside. The two could not bring an instant solution, and we had to keep buying until the last month when we received the first transfer and purchased a lactating cow at KES35000. I am happy that we now have enough milk not only for the baby but also for us to use in making our daily breakfast. We had been running a business in the nearby shopping center that is a combination of a Cybercafe, retail shop, and also a Mpesa shop in it. The three have been doing well even though we had to borrow a loan three months ago. I had been paying back in bits, and the arrival of this transfer enabled me to clear the remaining KES15000. With the remaining KES4000, we settled the school arrears we had with my wife in our former schools to obtain our certificates. We are happy that we are now free to take a step towards furthering our studies since the certificates we had been hoping to obtain are finally with us.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I shall have a chance to secure a job. I completed my secondary education at Kamaget Secondary School in the year 2013 where I attained 36 points. My secondary school certificate was retained due to fee balances amounting to KES 20000.With this amount I shall be able to settle the debt at school and have my certificate which will enable me advance my education to college level. As a result securing a good job will be easier.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Being a business-oriented person, I operate a motorcycle as well as a shop at Kamaget center. Morning is the happiest part of my day because I have many customers at the shop.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraint is the biggest hardship I have faced in life. My educational life has been at stake due to a lack of money. It has been my wish since childhood to join a college of my choice and do a course in laboratory science. I have been unable to further my education since 2013 when I completed my form four due to insufficient funds.
