"My husband and I started the construction of our new house months ago. It was important to us to move from our small mud house to a better one that could meet our needs as a family. We, however, did not have enough money for the same. My husband is a casual labourer who earns approximately KES 500 a day, while I am unemployed. Sadly, we were unable to complete the construction of the house. So when I received this transfer, I was glad. I spent KES 40,000 on the purchase of windows and doors, and labour costs to ensure our new home is completed. I also bought clothes worth KES 6,000 for the family. The ones we owned had grown old and tattered. Finally, I spent KES 5,000 to pay for school fees for my brother who is a high school student. I'm happy that he can now stay in school and learn."

"I am a mother of five children, I work as a house help in the Village in my neighbour's house. school fees as been my major worry, due to the little income that I earn, I normally depend on well-wishers and bursaries. I was so relieved when I received my transfer because my son had been sent home to collect school fees, therefore I used my transfer in paying school fees of KES 10,000, I then bought furniture worth KES 8000. Lastly, I bought three bags of maize worth KES 10500 so that we have enough foodstuff in the house. I am so grateful for the support that changed our lives greatly."

"Should I be qualified to receive money from Givedirectly, I intend to use the money for school fees because my mother had been unable to pay for my school fees since I dropped from school when I got promoted to the 8th Grade and became pregnant. It has been three years now since my aunt that was paying my school fees stopped because of my pregnancy, I have not been to school, and that it has been my dream to continue my education should anyone be able to help me. However, by being enroll in the GD program today makes me feel that my dream will come true because of the opportunity given me to be enroll. Secondly, my boy friend has been doing his best but the little he can get cannot pay my school fees and at the same time cater to our daughter. This had made it even more difficult for me to go back to school."

"After receiving my first transfer, I spent the first KES 27500 on the construction of a new house. I had been living with my family of 8 in a single kitchen for a long time. I had been contemplating over a good savings plan but had never been possible. It has been so expensive to raise school fees to keep my six children currently in school. After obtaining all the construction materials meant for construction, I also paid KES 4200 school fees for my elder son in secondary school, obtained school uniforms for all my five children in primary school worth KES10000 since they had been wearing old and tattered ones over the past months. I also spent KES4000 on buying and transporting the new piece of furniture home to substitute the old benches that I had been using. I am glad everything I had planned for is currently in place."

"I am a mother of 9, 4 of them school going children but my husband and I can't seem to be keeping up with school fees. I sell cassava for a living and my husband works in Kaloleni as a casual laborer in a laundry shop, making very little money. We have had to let two of our children drop out of school and search for casual jobs like fetching water for others, washing motorbikes and maids so that we can keep afloat. This breaks my heart because they are very bright and I hope that someday, somehow, they will go through school to university level and be people of substance in the world."

"My dream was to own livestock with my family. This has been impossible to achieve since I had no stable source of income instead of selling charcoal and fetching firewood for my neighbors at a fee, until a few weeks ago. When I received the second transfer, I bought 14 goats that I am currently rearing. I am keeping them with the hope of seeing them multiply to help me in meeting my upcoming financial needs in the future. I paid school fees for my five primary school children as well as buying some new clothes for all of us. I also bought a standard bed and mattress since the ones we had, were smaller and worn-out."

"Upon receiving the second transfer, I cleared school fees for my 5 children. One is in form one, while the other for are in primary school. It has been my wish to take my children to secondary school and this dream is coming to fulfillment since the first born joined form one using the money I received from GiveDirectly. I also did roofing of my house which we had started using the 1st transfer though it wasn’t complete. I also purchased a solar panel at KES 10500 that we are now having light at night not as before. I also did shopping for the children and used the remaining in obtaining foodstuff."

"This money will be of great help once I get a hold of it. I have six children, five of whom are in school. It does not please me every time they have to come back home because of school fees arrears. I will prioritize settling the balances and ensure they no longer have to go through school with such challenges."

"I am a widow taking care of my 6 grandchildren who are orphans. The elder grandchild completed his secondary education and he is doing some casual labour to earn a living, two are in secondary school while three are in primary school. These children solely depend on me as far as their academic and well-being is concerned. On receiving the money I took some of it and paid school fees for the children since they were on and off school due to school fees. I also bought four goats though 2 goats died. I also completed the roof of my house which I had started using the 1st transfer. Having been using paraffin for a while, which was very expensive, I decided to buy a small solar panel and as at now my grandchildren are using it in conducting their studies. I also bought some food which has been sustaining us up to now."
