How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I did not have any new goals that I didn't have before receiving this transfer as I had always aimed at progressing with building my house that had stalled because the first transfer was not enough to complete it. Therefore, I chose to make that my priority when I received my second transfer because I needed a permanent house that would serve us for a long time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I believe that GiveDirectly did everything well, it helped so many people and I personally got a house that I had started off so long ago but had stalled due to lack of enough money to complete it as well as some new clothes for my children. I am so grateful, and I don't see any particular thing not done well by GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer which was KES 35000 on making progress in building my house that I had already started building long time ago but then stalled due to lack of enough money to complete it. Therefore, when I got enrolled in GiveDirectly's program, I made some progress with the first transfer but couldn't complete it because it was a brick wall house that needed a substantial amount of money to complete. However, with the second transfer, I was able to make progress and I can confidently say that I am about to have the house of my dreams as it is nearing completion, all thanks to GiveDirectly. I wanted to have a permanent house that would last for a long time before weakening and requiring maintenance as well as repairing regularly, and in this house I have just that. I am so grateful.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 10 a.m. and I was at the hospital. My co-wife was unwell and so I had accompanied her while she sought treatment. I heard a beep on my phone, which I did not expect. I checked it, and to my amazement, I had received the cash transfer from GiveDirectly. Words cannot explain how happy I felt when I realised I could finally finish the construction of my house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Seeing the modern, spacious house that we currently live in gives me a great deal of joy. It's a stark contrast to the old, single-room mud house that we used to live in. It could barely accommodate our family of three. We had made efforts to build another but were stuck due to a lack of funds. My husband earns just KES 500 a day from casual labour. Most of this amount is spent on basic needs such as food. It was only after receiving this transfer that we were able to complete the construction of the house. We now have a dignified place to call home. It feels so good because my life is finally moving forward. Thanks, GD!
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband and I started the construction of our new house months ago. It was important to us to move from our small mud house to a better one that could meet our needs as a family. We, however, did not have enough money for the same. My husband is a casual labourer who earns approximately KES 500 a day, while I am unemployed. Sadly, we were unable to complete the construction of the house. So when I received this transfer, I was glad. I spent KES 40,000 on the purchase of windows and doors, and labour costs to ensure our new home is completed. I also bought clothes worth KES 6,000 for the family. The ones we owned had grown old and tattered. Finally, I spent KES 5,000 to pay for school fees for my brother who is a high school student. I'm happy that he can now stay in school and learn.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a spacious house to my family. This is because I am leaving in one bedroom house which is small in case I host visitors. I plan to spend Kshs.40,000 to build a three-bedroom house that will be enough for me and my visitors. I will also spend Ksh.15,000 to buy five indigenous goats at Ksh.3,000 each. The remaining amount will cater for bedding and other basic needs such as food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon. This is because I get enough time to relux and chart with neighbors.Unlike in the morning and evening hours, when I am busy doing household chores and sleep.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have ever faced in my life is chronic sickness-Asthma. This is because I am a housewife and my husband depends on a tuk-tuk driving job which earns him atmost Ksh 300 per day which is not enough. Due to this, I have been struggling to save enough money to have better shelter. Sometimes, I have to ask neighbors to accommodate my guest which is embarrassing.
