Karichwa
received a $420 second payment.
"I spent $150 on a young dairy cow when I received the second transfer. The purpose of purchasing the cow was to produce milk for both personal and business purposes. My secondary school-aged child was then sent out of school for fees, and I had to pay $100 in school fees. Right now, he feels at ease adjusting to school and starting his academics. I used the remaining $120 to purchase some food and kept the remainder for the family's maintenance."

Fatuma
received a $420 second payment.
"As soon as I got the chance to go ahead and retrieve the transfers, my first spending was focused on making an investment on my farm. I decided to spend KES 20,000 in buying a cow because I was hoping that it would help me when it came to farming as well as financed is the future in case I was in a bind. I also decided to spend KES 10,000 in paying tuition for my daughter because she had already been kicked out of school. Apart from that, I decided to put aside an extra KES 10,000 in case I needed money for my daughter's tuition in the future and then used the rest of the remaining funds on nourishment."

Tabu
received a $420 second payment.
"Before I had received this funds, I was really looking forward to building myself a much better house since the one I was living in was quite old and my kids and I were always cramped up in there yet they were growing up and I knew soon they would need their privacy. That is why after retrieving the money I proceeded to spend about KES 20,000 in buying more than a dozen pieces of iron sheets, timber and paying the mason as well. Afterwards I proceeded to invest in a couple of farm animals where I bought two cows and five goatswhich cost me roughly around KES 30,000. Last but not least I spent KES 3,000 to pay tuition for two of my kids."

Mwenda
received a second payment.
"I spent about $30 of my second transfer on paying fees for my four children who are in the neighbouring primary school. The money came in good time because I had already been alerted that they will be sent home because of the arrears. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for coming through during these difficult times because I am sure they would be at home. Also, I boosted my business of selling livestock in our local markets. I am so happy because ever since I revived the business, I have been earning good profits hence fending for my family has become easier. I later bought a new bed and two mattresses. I had to replace the old bedding since j used to experience lots of discomfort and pain every night. To add on that I purchased a dairy cow at $200 that I am currently keeping in my homestead. I hope that very soon it will start producing milk which I will start selling to my friends and generate an income. With the remaining amount, I bought food for my ten family members which was a relief to my spouse who has been the breadwinner."

Selina
received a $434 second payment.
"Before the transfers, I never had cows before as I had no stable source of income. I used the transfers to buy female cows for kshs 35,000. This is for milk production for my family's consumption and sale. I do casual work to earn a living and most of the time the pay is too little to cater for my basic needs, I do top it up with the money from selling milk and this has enabled me to take care of other basic needs like food, clothing and kids school fees.
I used the remaining part of the transfers of kshs 20,000 to buy a piece of three-seater furniture. I used to fear hosting friends and relatives as I never had enough seats for them, but my self-esteem has improved since I started receiving transfers from GiveDirectly."

Nancy
received a $434 second payment.
"Although I am a dairy farmer which is pretty a good business, I have never been able to build a permanent dairy shed and feeding area for my ten cows. This is because, I spend most of my the income on medication for my mother in-law who is very old and sickling. The balance is usually spend on paying school fees for my children and I am left with nothing to expand my dairy farm. When I was enrolled in the program, I saw it as a good opportunity to achieve this life long goal that I had desired to achieve for quite a long time. I spend my first transfer, I spend it to construct the structure and spend my second transfer to do roofing and put up other structures that were remaining. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for the financial support because I wouldn't have achieved this were it not for the transfers."

Betty
received a $420 second payment.
"My daughter Cherono, who was entering form one, was able to pay her educational expenses thanks to the second transfer. We spent $300 on school fees and $130 on uniforms and other necessities for school. The timing of this transfer was perfect because I really needed it. Certainly, God used GiveDirectly to reach others. My children had been in bad health for a while due to a lack of sufficient and nutritious food, which I also managed to purchase. I was able to buy clothes for my children using the money that was left after replacing their outgrown outfits. I also paid the children's primary school tuition. I cultivate tomatoes, onions, and cabbage and am a mother of 6. I do go to sell cabbages on most days. I typically go to the market on Mondays to sell cabbages in order to earn more money and cover my children's tuition and food for the family. My spouse also sells goats and cows to provide for our family."

"One thing that has made it possible for me to be where I am now is the unconditional transfers from GiveDirectly that we got. With both transfers, I was able to buy cows and land, which has given me the pride I had previously lacked."

Kadzo
received a $421 second payment.
"Investing in livestock is the route I opted to take after getting the second transfer. I bought a cow for $300 and three goats for $96. The aim of buying these is for livestock farming which will help me to solve some financial needs by selling if the needs arise. After that, I paid $128 school fees for my 6 elementary school children so that they could be allowed to do their examinations. Apart from the foodstuff that I bought for the family, I added $150 from the first transfer savings to the remaining amount and started an animal vending business."

William
received a $421 second payment.
"Since my business is doing better compered to last year, I want to save some money from the profit and buy two dairy cows. A liter of milk sells at $0.7 and if I will manage to get fourth liters per day, that will be some good money.. Achieving this means earning some good income and therefore expansion of my businesses."
