"I am delighted that the program was carried out in such a detailed manner that it allowed every household to enroll and earn a similar amount of money that transformed their families. The freedom to choose how to spend made the program appealing to every household because we could deal with our individual issues without being forced to spend in a certain way. Many people solve the water problem by purchasing large water tanks that are currently collecting rainwater and saving every household a lot of time that would have been wasted traveling to the dams to fetch water. If this could be replicated in other villages, I believe it would result in a significant transformation and an improved standard of living throughout the villages."

"Since GiveDirectly arrived in our village, a lot has changed. Previously, many people lived in old structures with mud walls and grass roofs. Since then, housing conditions have improved, and every household now has a better house roofed with iron sheets. No one had a water tank, and we all spent a lot of time walking to the river to get water, but after the transfers, more than 80% of the population purchased water tanks and are now collecting clean rainwater from their newly constructed roofs. Most of our children, who had stayed at home due to a lack of school fees, are now back in school, along with other diverse spending patterns in every household since they gave us the freedom to choose our spending. The approach was flawlessly executed by the friendly field officers, who made certain that we understood everything from the beginning by explaining in a language that both the young and the elderly could understand."

"Our land is prone to draughts, and rain can take up to four months to fall. Getting up early and walking to and from the river to collect water has been time-consuming and expensive to buy from the water vendors. I am currently working as a nurse in a nearby hospital, and I rarely have time to go fetch water after work. To combat this, I decided to invest in water reservoirs, purchasing an additional 3000-liter plastic water tank for $180 to supplement the initial 4000-liter one. During rainy seasons, I collect enough rainwater from the roof to last my family of five and the livestock for more than two months. I am glad we have been getting a lot of rain lately, and I am enjoying having clean water right outside my door. I also used some of the remaining funds to pay off debts incurred as a result of the installation of a biogas system, which has significantly reduced the cost of fuel in my household. I had been paying the installation agency $60 per month, and I currently have a balance of $360 that I hope to clear by June of this year. In addition, I spent the remaining funds on food shopping and new clothes for my three children."

"First off, I would like to appreciate Give Directly for the continued support it provides us through cash transfers each month; our lives are transforming. My new plan is to renovate my house's tin roof, which has corroded over the last twenty years. It has these perforations that let water into the house whenever it rains, dampening the space and exposing my family to cold infections. Therefore, to  implement the renovations, I need to assemble at least 32 pieces of iron sheets, each of which costs roughly $10. In the short run, my aim is  to acquire two iron sheets through each of the upcoming monthly transfers until I have enough for the project."

"Two of our eight kids are in secondary school, four are in primary school, and the other two are still very small. We rely on my husband, who makes a meager living selling water in the town. Our children had left school at some time before we began getting the transfers because we could not afford to pay their tuition. They are now enrolled in school, which makes me happy because we were able to pay off the arrears thanks to the transfers. We used $20 from the transfers from the previous three months to pay the arrears they owed the school. Additionally, I spent $30 on a goat in the hopes of raising it and later selling some of its young to help pay for our kids' school expenses. I bought meals for my family out of the remaining $44. I appreciate the help, and I'm pleased of myself for helping my spouse with some of our domestic responsibilities."

"When I received the second transfer, I used $300 to purchase a water tank and fix gathers in my house. I then used another $150 to pay school fees for my children and the remaining amount of money was used to buy furniture for our household. For a long time, we had been forced to travel for long distance in search of clean drinking water from river sources and when we received this transfer, we thought it was wise to purchase a water tank. I am extremely happy that we now have clean drinking water that we harvest whenever there are short or long rains. Gone are the days when we would have to travel for very long hours in search of water which would not always be safe. I am so grateful as well for the furniture that I was able to buy and which has made our home more comfortable than ever before. I had been unable to do all these owing to the fact that I am a single mother who relies on subsistence farming to earn a living for me and my two children. The long seasons of drought had even made the situation worse and the little that we got from farming would just be enough for consumption and nothing left to save."

"My long-term goal is to build rentals, save some money I am getting from my business and start off. My other short-term goal is to buy a water tank and start a water business, where I would sell a twenty-liter jerrican for $0.1"

"I am a teacher and before receiving the transfers, I used to walk for 12 kilometres to and from school everyday. I used to get home tired that I couldn't engage in any productive activity like looking for feed for my cows. When I received the transfers, I thought it was a good idea to buy a motor bike to ease my movement to and from school and also assist in ferrying napier grass for the cows. I spend my my second transfer to purchase a motorbike worth $500 and the balance to buy food for my family. I am so happy that I no longer get home tired and I can do some other activities like fetching water and carrying napier grass from the farm to home for my dairy cows."

"With my family of two, fetching enough water every day from the river which is far away from our village has been so hard. This had been my responsibility as my children are still schooling and only come home late in the evening. Ensuring that I avail enough water to enhance their cleanliness and also for home use has been a struggle. Upon receiving the second transfer, we agreed with my husband to install tap water in our home. Buying all the materials needed and having it fixed cost us $300. I also cleared school fees for my children who had been sent home due to arrears which had accumulated to $150. Our house needed a few repairs, thus we had it sorted out for $50. With the remaining amount of $30, I obtained foodstuff for my household."
