"After a huge investment of my second transfer on starting up a business for my spouse where she sells petrol, I now have a new goal of boosting the business. At the moment we purchase the petrol in jerry cans and use measuring containers whenever we sell to customers. I find this risky considering how explosive petrol is. Even though we still do not earn much, but I am planning to save some of the profits we make from the business and add to the income I earn from my other sources to raise money for boosting the business. My goal is to be able to have a tanker delivering the petrol to our shop station and have a pump. With this, we shall have not only ensured our safety and the safety of people around us but our sales will improve hence improved income." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I am happy that the results of the wise spending of both the first and the second transfer are amazing. My household currently has a reliable source of income after purchasing a second-hand motorcycle that my spouse operates for taxi services. I now have a new goal to go back to school so that I can complete my high school studies. I dropped out in form two after my parents hit a hard rock in raising my school fees which later sent me to marriage. Life is tough, especially without proper education. I have tried to secure jobs but all in vain. I believe that the only way to succeed in life is having proper education hence my quench to g back to school."

"Since I do not have a reliable source of income, I had not been able to initiate my personal development plans. As a matter of fact, the only property I have ever owned throughout my lifetime is just an ancestral parcel of land, that is relatively too small to be shared among three brothers. Therefore, when GiveDirectly enrolled me in its program, I developed a goal of buying my own piece of land. My aim is to get an additional plot that I can use to carry on with some farming practices. As soon as I accomplished this goal, I developed a plan of acquiring a new motorcycle for the bodaboda business. Bodaboda is a simple-to-start business that will go a long way in helping me to raise an extra income for my household."

Johana received a $27 fifth payment.
"After I fourth transfer I decided to buy a motorcycle that I planned to use mostly for domestic purposes. Since I do not have all the money required to pay for the ride at once, the owner and I came to an agreement that I would have to pay for it bit by bit. Therefore I used KES 2,000 to pay for a part of the debt to the owner. Then took the remaining KES 1,000 and bought drinking water since it was quite scarce back here, also bought petrol for the motorcycle and used the KES 300 that remained after this to buy three packets of maize flour since food was also another problem for us." "Yes, I have a new goal for this last transfer I received. Using all of my transfers only on building a single house will not help me. The house I previously planned to build will cost more than the total amount of money I have received from GiveDirectly. So, I have changed my mind to buy a second handed motorcycle for business purposes. I will save the profits, that will help me sustain my family and I and even help to complete my house in the future."

"It was around 7pm, my phone was off and had gone to have it charged at a neighbor's house who told me to check because he had received his transfer already. So, when I checked is when saw that I had also received mine, and I was so happy when I got the money because I knew it would help me address the challenges I was facing including medication for my wife as well as get a motorcycle which I would be operating as a motorcycle taxi that would be our regular source of income. It was so difficult to address these challenges because my occasional jobs as a casual labourer in a quarry, at times taking care of other people's livestock for a little pay or cutting trees barely could give me the ability even to meet my family's immediate needs. Therefore, I was so happy when I got the money because it was a very huge relief to me."

"Right after receiving my first transfer, it was a coincidence that the owner of the motorbike that had been the source of my daily income took it back leaving me jobless. We had to change the initial of buying livestock and instead of obtaining a second-hand motorcycle at KES 48000. Since then, it has been serving us well with a good income, especially on the market days when the roads are busy. I am hopeful that the saving plan that w have started will soon enable me to obtain a dairy cow that will, in turn, cushion me and my family of five in the daily purchase of milk. I spent the remaining amount in acquiring new spare parts and servicing the bike as it was already in use and needed to be refurbished before running my daily business." "We spent most of the recent transfer on building another house. We spent approximately KES 43000 doing so. We decided to build another house because we only had one that is grass-thatched. It has always been our wish to build another one but due to lack of money, we were not in a position to. I have a motorcycle taxi business and the money that I usually make most of it goes to the purchase of food for my family and paying back a loan since I had bought the motorcycle on loan. We also used KES 10000 of the transfer on repaying the motorcycle loan. We are thus grateful to GiveDirectly for their big support." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)
