"My plan is to first purchase food with first transfers. I plan to purchase maize and beens at about $110. For the remaining amount I plan to purchase chicken for $20 and 2 goats at $70. For the second and third transfers I plan to build a house since we live in a single house which is not enough for my 3 children my husband and I. With the amount that remains I plan to buy more goats. I thank God for GiveDirectly because the transfers will surely change my life."

"In the upcoming year and beyond, I aim to intensify my attention towards animal husbandry, which I recently commenced with the aid of the second transfer. At the moment, I possess a heifer, and I intend to increase my livestock by acquiring additional animals in the future. Furthermore, I am in the process of constructing a chicken house that will serve as a foundation for my upcoming poultry venture. By engaging in these two initiatives, I anticipate supplementing my family's income by trading livestock-related products such as eggs, milk, and the offspring."

"When I started receiving the transfers, I made up my mind to spend most of the money on buying livestock and building a bigger house. These are some of the things that I cannot afford from the income I make selling chewing sticks. The best I can do with my job is provide food for my wife and four children. So, I spent the recent transfer, $34, to obtain six iron sheets for the new house. Am not pleased with how broken my current house looks, especially as it has been around for the last ten years. Besides, being a one-room structure, I share the space with my six chickens that I obtained through a previous transfer. My aim is to construct a more spacious shelter, at least one with two rooms, where the extra chamber will provide a space for the chickens. "

"Currently, my goal is to build a new house in the coming few years. The current structure is in poor shape and I am afraid it may crumble anytime. Given my old age and the fact that am recovering from a surgical operation, I cannot actively work to raise funds for this project. I trust that the monthly cash transfers will support this exercise as I plan to be saving $20 every month towards the purchase of the construction materials like building poles and iron sheets. After building the three-room house, I wish to start a venture of rearing poultry, particularly chickens, as a source of income. I believe that this is the cheapest practice I could ever start and maintain given my limited resources. "

"As far as personal development is concerned, I want to venture deeply into chicken rearing as a means of livelihood. Although my previous flock of 24 hens perished through a chicken disease, it never discouraged me from buying more. To me, it was a learning experience as I gained more knowledge and skills on how to prevent or control it. The zeal to support the education of my eight children is what motivates me to keep trying and keep buying more chickens. Am grateful to God for allowing me to be part of this financial program that has so far brought an incredible transformation in my family’s well-being. "

"As the family grows in number, other utilities need to expand as well. For example, housing and food. My family of six currently lives in a one-room house, and I am worried that our privacy as parents is compromised as the children's intelligence keeps improving. When I received the transfers, I spent $200 on purchasing logs that I am yet to manufacture into timber to construct an additional room to house my children. I was not in a position to accomplish this before because the income my husband earns from the plumbing job is insufficient to cater for all the family's needs except food and school fees. I had to drop the househelp job I previously had to attend to my newborn baby, but hopefully I will resume once I gain strength so as to support my husband in raising the family. Additionally, I spent $40 on goats, $30 on 50kg of maize, and $50 on school fees for my children, who are in pre-primary and grade 1, respectively. As a financial backup plan, I bought 3 chickens for $15 so as to earn income and restore strength to get back on my feet since always borrowing money is demeaning and might as well bring family conflicts. I never believed that I would one day be a beneficiary of such a lovely program that uplifts one from extreme poverty."

"If it were not for the financial constraints, I would channel every penny from the cash transfers toward securing more livestock. Sadly, the constant hunger and lack of school fees for my six grandchildren derail me from accomplishing this goal. My family’s well-being is the priority. However, in the long run, I wish to be able to fulfill my dream of owning goats and chickens. Having these animals will guarantee me a steady flow of cash even after the transfers cease in the coming years. "

"In the coming year, I aim to expand my subsistence farming activities, which currently involve an acre and a half of maize plantation and livestock farming that includes goats and chicken. Specifically, I plan to increase the number of my 19 chickens, as there is a high demand for eggs in my hotel. I currently sell a tray of eggs for $4, which adds to my savings from the restaurant business and farming activities. Additionally, I am constructing a plot in the nearby shopping center and have already built two rooms using cal-sheet iron sheets. I hope to construct an extra room for my two elder sons."

"As my age advances, my ability to work and make an income will decrease. This is why I want to dive deeper into rearing livestock because it is the only way I will be able to provide for my family in the future. Currently, I have three goats and three chickens that I obtained using previous cash transfers. My plan is to continue spending most of the cash transfers to buy more goats and chickens. I believe as they reproduce, they will build me a solid source of income. "

"Depending on a single source of income can be stressful and draining, and this has never been my wish. Although we wish for crop diversification in my area, the climatic conditions, market, and lack of knowledge are obstacles. At Saoset village, for instance, tea farming is not a go-to business since the soils are poor for such, but sugarcane and coffee farming can thrive. Unfortunately, the residents here are not knowledgeable, and for the markets to thrive, a reasonable number of people should have planted such crops on their farms. Since I cannot be a lone ranger in such a business, I hope to venture extensively into poultry farming to support my family of 5. I plan on using $500 to construct a poultry farm to accommodate over 100 chickens. I will be glad to earn from the sales of the eggs and chicken and, therefore, be financially stable."
