How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My husband and I hold great optimism for the goats we purchased, believing they will multiply and flourish, given their reputed high-quality breed. Beyond their potential for reproduction, we find immense gratitude in the daily care they demand, keeping us occupied and fulfilled. As elderly individuals who cannot engage in manual labor, these goats symbolize more than just livestock—they represent our hope for a dependable source of income. We eagerly anticipate their continued health and growth, as they not only provide us with a reason to embrace each day but also infuse our lives with purpose. The idleness we once had was not good to our well-being, fostering negative thoughts and deteriorating health. Now, with our days filled tending to our goats, we've discovered a renewed sense of purpose and liveliness Looking ahead, we envision the possibility of selling the goats to sustain ourselves in the future, and perhaps even supporting our devoted son, who has been our steadfast caretaker. Additionally, the simple comfort of sleeping in the new beds, has transformed our rest. We awake each morning rejuvenated, free from the fatigue and body aches that once plagued us hence reducing the few instances of illnesses that we had because of lack of good rest.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is the best thing that has ever happened to us. Before it came into our lives, we had completely lost hope for life, as we had nothing to look forward to. Right now, it has given us purpose for life, and we are so happy and grateful. There should be no changes to its approach in helping people, as it is doing an exceptional job.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $250 of the transfer to renovate our house, which was on the verge of collapsing due to termite infestation. My husband and I are elderly and unable to work, relying on our son to provide us with what little he can so we can buy food; we could not burden him with the house too. Now, sleeping in a decent home, we're content and at peace. I then spent $200 and bought 2 beds and 2 mattresses for my husband and me as we had been sleeping on the floor with worn-out bedding for years, causing body aches in the morning. Sleeping on a comfortable bed is like a dream come true because we knew that at our age, we would not afford to get one. Furthermore, I spent $60 and bought 2 female goats of good breed, hoping they would reproduce and provide support in the future by selling them. They also keep us busy and give us something to wake up to in the morning as we have nothing to do. I spent the remaining amount of the transfer on food as we did not have much food and also thought that we would relieve our son from the burden of buying us food even if it's for a little while. We're grateful to GiveDirectly, and may God bless them abundantly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a sunny afternoon, and I was busy planting in the garden when my phone buzzed. Being unable to read, I didn't pay it much mind. Later, when I returned home, a family member shared the news of receiving their cash transfer from GiveDirectly. My heart raced with anticipation, so I asked my son to check for me. The moment he confirmed the money was in my account, a rush of happiness washed over me. Finally, there was hope for a better tomorrow! My thoughts turned to our humble shelter; the possibility of change filled me with excitement.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Life used to be hard for us. Our house leaked when it rained, and sometimes we didn't have enough food to eat. But everything changed when we received the cash transfer from GiveDirectly. We fixed our leaky house and made it comfortable and safe. Now, when it rains, we stay dry and warm. Again, we never go hungry anymore. We can afford to buy food without worrying. I feel so happy and relieved knowing that my family doesn't have to struggle like we used to. This money has made our lives so much better, and it feels like a new beginning filled with hope.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The leaking roof over our heads had been a constant worry, so I decided to use a significant part of the money to renovate our humble home. Changing the roof brought a wave of relief, and now I can sleep peacefully in a comfortable and dry place, something I hadn't enjoyed for a while. But it wasn't just about the house. I wanted my family to experience comfort too. With part of the money, I bought two beds and two mattresses. No more nights on small, broken traditional beds; now we sleep on proper beds, and it feels like a luxury. I cherish the smiles on my family's faces every night. Additionally, I invested in a goat for $35. It might seem small, but it's a step towards a more secure future. The remaining amount, I allocate to food. Even though I'm getting older and taking care of my sick husband through casual labor, knowing we have a comfortable home and enough to eat brings a deep sense of peace and gratitude.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I have a family of five members with three being children. I do casual job earning approximately $30 per month which caters for food only and my husband is sick and he cannot work at all. One of my boys is supposed to join college but he has remained at home for two years now due to lack of funds.I will use $700 to enroll my child to the college of his choice. I will also use $300 to take my husband to hospital for checkup and treatment. My desire is to see him walking without any support.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The community has missed rains for at least seven seasons and this has caused drought and famine. In April 2023, we received heavy rain and I planted maize crops on my three acre land and harvested fifteen bags of maize each 90kg. I am happy because this maize will sustain my family for almost seven months.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband and I are having health issues. I suffer from ulcers and this has affected me for almost five years now. The husband got an accident and broke one of the bones on his right leg and he cannot stand up on his own. The health complications has affected my work because I can engage myself on hard activities and I also do nurse my husband every day.
