How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been because the financial support empowered me to renovate my house. Previously, I used to shelter under a semipermanent house with some muddy and very weak walls. My worry was someday it might collapse especially during the winter seasons. To add to that, the cold nights were also stressing and I honestly never had peace. My children were always attacked with cold-related diseases such as pneumonia which was a result of the condition of the house. I am now happy because my children are no longer sick and they are so healthy. Also, the fact that I now have good bedding brings the biggest difference in my life. We are now sleeping comfortably without the severe back pains like before.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does so well by empowering my whole village. Back in the days, we used in small huts with muddy walls and in every rainy season, it was so stressful. We now have permanent houses which have always been our dream. Secondly, in my village, no one owned livestock, but when we received the transfers, the majority of us have now bought livestock such as cows and goats. Therefore i do not see any part that GiveDirectly failed us
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying six bags of cement at KES 650 each for the renovation of my house since it was a temporary one. I later gave the mason KES2400, as his labor charge. Also, I bought a wooden and mattress to replace the old mats that we have been using and I have never had peace in my sleep. To add to that, I bought two goats at a total of KES 10000 as my assets that I can depend on. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family that will sustain s to the next harvesting season.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had gone to my farm early in the morning when I heard my phone ringing, notifying me of an incoming message. When I checked what the message was all about, I was full of joy when I realised I had received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I thanked them since the money would help me fulfil the things I could not do by myself.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have been able to renovate my old house which was built with mud to be a permanent one. In the temporary state, it could not withstand heavy rains. Because of this, I purchased enough building materials which include blocks, cement, and sand to renovate it and also putting a floor. Having a permanent house is the greatest achievement, which for years I have failed to fulfil due to lack of financial resources. I am happy to live in a permanent house unlike the previous one.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I committed the whole of the first transfer on purchasing some building materials to renovate my house. It was not in a stable state since it was built with mud only. I was worried that it might be swept away in case of heavy rains. However, I am now at peace because through the transfer, I rebuilt it with blocks and cement to make more stable. It would have taken years for me to achieve this but I am grateful to GiveDirectly for their financial support. My house is now more stable and decent unlike the previous one.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a plan of investing on livestock farming when I receive this money. Livestock farming is better for me at this old age since it does not involve a lot of physical work. I will buy one dairy cow to help me get milk for consumption. I buy milk when I have a little money but most of the time I do without. I will also buy two oxen to help me plough my farm. This will save me a lot of energy. The three will cost me around 200 USD each.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I spend the morning hours in my farm. I grow maize and cassava. Farm work is tiresome mainly due to the scorching sun. At the end of the day I am usually tired. Evening comes as a relief for me since I get to rest and reflect on my day. This makes it the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
As a farmer, prolonged drought has been a big challenge for me .This is because I do not get enough food from my farm. I do not have any other source of income and this has made me struggle especially now when old age is catching up with me. I cannot do most of the physical jobs and I am all alone with my wife since my children are all grown ups.
