How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been because through financial support I was able to build a new house. Initially, I used to shelter in a very small house with very weak walls. It could not accommodate us all and most of my children had to seek shelter from relatives. This was the most hectic moment in my life because I felt I had failed them as a parent. However, after receiving them I had to prioritize that. I am happy now because we are living family as a family which has been my dream. Also, the gaits that I managed to purchase have brought a great impact on my life. At least I will now be having an asset to rely on in case of any emergency that may occur.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by sending money directly into our mobile phones. This made it easy for us to plan for the cash according to our heart desires considering we were also given the opportunity. Also, each and everyone was well informed on how to protect the money and advised not to discose our Mpesa pins. On the other hand, I do not see any part that GiveDirectly did wrong
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying some building materials such as building poles, iron sheets 20 pieces, nails, timber, and threads. I purchased all these with an intention of constructing a new house because the previous one was very small and one of its walls had collapsed. Also, I bought four goats that act as my assets that I will be leaning on Incase of any emergency. To add to that, I cleared school fees for my children who are still in primary school. Also I bought new beds and mattresses and I am now sleeping comfortably like a baby. I saved the remaining amount for my son who will transition to high school in August

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7 in the morning when I had just woken up and I was heading to the farm when I heard a message tone from my mobile phone. On checking the content I was shocked and happy at the same after realizing that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I even returned back home and started celebrating with my family.9m
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now sleep under a decent shelter. The previous house was in critical condition and during the winter seasons, I had to seek shelter from relatives and friends together with my children. It reached a time whereby we were like a burden to them because they started complaining about us being there. So we had to stop asking for help from them and we had to sort ourselves in our small house. Life was really tough, but the coming of GiveDirectly into my life transformed everything. I no longer have to worry about the heavy downpours and even the wild animals especially at night after building a decent spacious house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials, such as some pieces of iron sheets, several building poles, threads, timber, and nails These were for the construction of a new house since the previous one was almost collapsing. I also bought some bedding some as a new bed and two mattresses to replace the traditional beds that we have been using for all those years. With the remaining amount, I bought enough foodstuffs and some other household items that I was lacking.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My first plan when I receive this money is building a house for my children. We are so much squeezed in the current one. I have seven children and the one bedroom we have is not enough. The house will cost approximately 200 USD. We have never heard the privilege of sleeping in a bed. This money will provide me with that opportunity. I will buy 2 beds. One for me and the other for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is the time that I gauge the success of the day. This is why it is the happiest part of my day. I get to relax after a busy day knowing that I have at least achieved something. I spend my day doing house chores and sometimes vending charcoal.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My spouse's source of income is what we depend on as a family. He does casual jobs in the construction industry. This jobs are not readily available and sometimes he stays at home without work for up to a month. This has made us struggle a lot in providing the needs like food and school fees. This has been the biggest hardship of my life.
