How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
As I stand behind the counter of my humble cafeteria, I know what I am working toward, what drives me forward every day. My goal is crystal clear; to ensure that my children never have to miss school because of fees. While watching them with their bright eyes full of hope, I promise myself that I'll give them the gift of education and a brighter future. With every sale and every small amount I save, I visualize them in a classroom, absorbing knowledge, and growing into the best versions of themselves. It may seem like a distant dream, but I'm determined to make it a reality. Quality education for my children will be my legacy, and I'll continue to pour my heart and soul into this cafeteria business until they walk confidently toward a future they deserve.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Having been a recipient of GiveDirectly's generosity, I can confidently say that they are a life-changing organization. They pulled us out of the depths of poverty and elevated us to a place where we could finally see ourselves as valued human beings. The concept of cash transfer, in my view, is a game-changer. It allows people to make their own choices and pursue their preferences, rather than being forced into situations they don't truly need. This empowering approach has touched my life and the lives of many others, making me a staunch supporter of GiveDirectly and its transformative mission.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving the second cash transfer from GiveDirectly was an answered prayer, a lifeline that turned our lives around. With the money in my hands, I wasted no time in settling the pressing matters that burdened our family. My heart swelled with joy as I paid off the $80 school fee arrears that had kept my five children out of school. Seeing them walk through those school gates again filled me with immense pride and hope for their future. Thereafter, I turned my attention to my husband's trusty motorbike, which had been the backbone of our livelihood. With $200, I had it serviced and repaired, restoring its former reliability. My husband's business of supplying charcoals to clients could now thrive once more, ensuring a steady income for our family. Feeling empowered by this newfound financial security, I made some thoughtful investments for our future. I bought three goats for $150, providing a source of sustenance and growth potential. Additionally, I bought a nice bed for $70, something we had long dreamt of but never could afford. As the days passed, I continued to manage the remaining amount prudently, saving it for our family's daily needs and unexpected expenses that life may throw our way.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received my first transfer of $550 at around 4:00 pm that day. I remember very well that I was alone that day and I could not share the news with anyone just as a safety precaution. I said a prayer to God for blessing me with the money and I later informed my husband that GiveDirectly had made good their promise of sending us the money as earlier promised. The thought of receiving such huge amount of money and the things that I was finally going to accomplish made me very excited.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Looking at the various investments that I made with this transfers makes me very happy. The comfort that I now enjoy while sleeping and the way my business has been boosted makes me very elated. Initially I used to make upto $3 per day which was just enough to buy food for family and the amount has significantly improved ever since I boosted it with GiveDirectly funds.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my first transfer, I used $120 to buy a mattress and another $95 to purchase a bed. Before receiving this transfer, I never owned a bed and I had always wanted to own one and know how it feels to sleep on a bed with a mattress. I am so happy that I was able to accomplish this with the funds that I received from GiveDirectly. I also used a other $40 to buy a goat. This is an investment that shall not only keep my memories about GiveDirectly but also multiply quite easily and enable me meet other expenses in future. I then took another $50 and improved my business with it. I run a small restaurant and the money was very helpful to me in buying foodstuff and utensils that aided in improving of the business. I am so happy that the business is performing very well and I am looking forward to making more profits going forward. I used the remaining amount to buy clothes and other basic household needs for my family.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
When I receive this money, I would want to buy some domestic animals like goats and/or cattle that I would use to store my wealth. I know I still have five children to see through school and so my plan for the animals is to let them multiply so that I would be selling any time I'm in need of school fees. I personally didn't get any education, but I would love to change this for my children. I would also like to get a modern bed and some quality beddings.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have had a generous share of hardship over the last six months that makes it hard to even pinpoint happy moments. However, I normally take time between four to six in the evening to sit with my friends from a neighboring homestead to share fun and ideas through stories and generally catch up. I find this quite enjoyable and refreshing that I always want to do it everyday after work.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband trades on charcoal which he buys cheaply from the village then ferries to Kilifi where he resells for a profit. Personally I am employed in a particular food kiosk in a nearby shopping center as a cook and a waiter. I earn averagely $3 daily. Well, I'm not able to tell how much my husband makes but he's been giving me around $2 daily for most days to buy food for the family. This is quite too little to feed a family of seven; five children all schooling and the two of us, not forgetting other bills like school fees. As we speak, two of my children are already sent home to collect school fees areas.
