How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming years and beyond, my primary focus will be farming. I have a plan to lease two acres of land, with one dedicated to planting maize and the other for commercial tomato farming. To finance this venture, I intend to sell some of my goats, using the proceeds to cover the costs of leasing the land and investing in the necessary agricultural inputs. I believe that this diversification in farming activities will provide a sustainable source of income for my family and enable us to improve our livelihoods.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The program's unconditional cash transfer approach has been instrumental in empowering us to allocate the funds based on our individual needs without any constraints. We are truly thankful for the positive impact it has had on our lives. As far as I can see, the program's implementation has been great, and I have not noticed any shortcomings.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Due to my hand deformity, I am unable to help my wife with farming, making it challenging to be the sole provider for our family. To ease some of her burden, I spent $150 on food for our family of eight to ensure we had enough to eat. I also used $180 of the transfer to pay for my child's school fees in secondary school, ensuring that her arrears were cleared to prevent her from being sent home and to enable her to focus on her studies. It pains me to see her at home while her peers are in school. Additionally, I allocated $100 to purchase three goats, which will add to our small herd and serve as a future source of income. Lastly, I gave the remaining amount to my spouse, allowing her to buy clothes and show appreciation for the valuable work she does in our family.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My long-standing aspiration to purchase a plot of land has been hindered by financial limitations. Nevertheless, I remain hopeful that God will pave the way for me to accomplish this goal, despite the challenges.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The support provided by GiveDirectly has had a significant and favorable effect on our standard of living, resulting in a life-altering transformation. The program's unconditional approach allowed us to allocate the funds according to our specific needs, without any limitations, and we are extremely grateful for the constructive impact it has had on our lives. From my perspective, I have not observed any inefficiencies in the program's execution.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My top priority after receiving the third transfer was to build a house for my children. This would provide them with a comfortable sleeping space and a quiet area for studying, which was previously impossible as I relied on herding animals and my wife worked as a farmer. My hand deformity prevented me from taking up casual jobs. I have six children. Therefore, I spent $300 on building the house with the transfer. Additionally, I allocated $150 to pay for my children's school fees. The assistance from GiveDirectly has transformed our lives tremendously, enabling us to achieve what was once beyond our reach. We are extremely grateful for their support.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The desire to purchase a water tank was driven by the lack of a constant water supply within our compound. We were struggling with getting clean water because we are in a semi-arid region. During our entire first transfer, we used the money to buy a water tank, and we topped the amount with an extra $100 off my savings. I'm a farmer, even though I'm not actively involved in farming as before due to a hand disability and thus makes me more dependent on my wife. We have six children. I'm glad that we were able to achieve this milestone.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The ability to buy a water tank has made the biggest impact on my daily life. Due to financial limitations, it was previously impossible to purchase. I am overjoyed that I have finally accomplished my goal, meaning that we would be able to harvest rainwater and also pump water from the river directly into our tank. I will be eternally grateful for the wonderful gift that transformed my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I clearly remember that as soon as I received my transfer, I left for the shopping center where I had been running an errand. When I checked my phone after hearing a message buzz, I discovered a text message informing me that GiveDirectly had sent me money. This was the best news I had heard in a long time; it was so refreshing that I forgot I was tired. I was thrilled because I was confident that I could reach the objectives I had previously established. I told my wife when I got home, and she was grateful and happy too.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
When we receive the transfer we are planning to buy this piece of land at $500 from the owner. Then we'll be able to stay in peace and secure a place for our 6 children. We also intend to buy a 5000 litres water tank at $300, this will enable us to capture and store rain water which means we'll have safe water for drinking. Now, we drink from the nearby river that affects our teeth and weakens the bones.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Since we moved to Sukutek Village, we're able to even relax unlike when we lived near Lake Bogoria. While living near the Lake, we were always worried of crocodiles either eating our children or goats. At the moment we're happy as this place is safe and also there are fewer snakes away from the Lake, hence our children, and animals are much safer.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am Chrispus, 32, was dispalaced by expanding Lake Bogoria in August 2020 and forced to relocate with my entire family of 6 children and my wife. Luckily we all survived. Our biggest challenge currently is that we're staying at a well wishers land and always worried that the owner may ask us to leave at any moment. This has affected us since we cannot even burn charcoal using the nearby trees to sell and feed our family.
