How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Because I want to prioritize my child's schooling, I haven't set any goals since using the second transfer. I still want to finish this large goal first before moving on to something else because it's the biggest one I started with. Hence, from my cattle investment, I often set aside a small sum so that I can see the aim through to completion.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly thrives by donating money to the underprivileged in the community so they can improve their homes and even invest in various initiatives of their choosing. They were able to raise their standard of living as a result. I can't think of anything GiveDirectly did poorly. What I can suggest is that, while you do your location scouting in a region, please take into consideration the families who have trouble getting their kids to secondary schools and universities, and if feasible offer them some scholarships. This is what I'm suggesting because after you educate the youth, they will be the ones to end family poverty.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since we are faced with a scarcity of water in our area, I fixed a fresh water tap at home using the first transfer. Despite the water tap being at my home, the water problem was not fully solved since the water tap can go for almost a month without water. Based on that, I opted to buy a water tank that has a capacity of 5000 liters. The tank cost $300. I saw this as prudent since I use the tank to store water and in case the whole area faces water shortage, I use the tank water not only for domestic use but also for sale thus generating income. Thereafter, I used $150 to complete a toilet that I had started earlier on. For the remaining amount, I paid school fees for my children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7 am, I was at home preparing myself before I could take my cows to the field for herding. I was with my spouse and daughter-in-law at home when I received the message notification on my phone. After checking, I was surprised to see the Mpesa message from Segovia technology. At first, I did not believe it until when I confirmed my account balance. I was very happy about receiving the transfer and thanked the organization for fulfilling their promises.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Being able to connect my house with tap water for the family is the biggest difference in my life. In addition, my wife is now feeling well something that has continuously make my life happy.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My wife had been sick for a very long time. She had been referred for the advance check but I lacked the financial muscles. After receiving the transfer, I used KES 12000 to take her for proper medical assistance and a check-up for the chest problem. Currently, I am happy that she is doing well and continue with recovering. In addition, I spend KES 9000 to purchase enough food stock for the family which has been sustaining us till now. Furthermore, I had desired to connect tap water to my home which will make sure that I have a steady water supply for the family. This is because my wife is sick and can not walk a long distance looking for water for the family. I used KES 24,200 to purchase the pipes, meter gauge, and other materials plus payment of the labor charges. I was optimistic that I will be able to solve the problem of water in my house once and for all.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a child who schools at Ngerenya Secondary School and is going to join form three next academic year. Once I receive this money I will pay all his school fees for that academic year which is 25,000 KES so that I can do away with the stresses that I get as a lack of school fees for my child. I will use the remaining amount to build a toilet as I have been using the bushes for so long and nowadays people are clearing the bushes either preparing the land for farming or settling.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am a staunch believer of the catholic church and I do love singing. When I sing it appeases my soul.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My family especially my wife and I are prone to diseases. Last year,2021, I went for vein surgery which cost 10,000 KES and I always feel my body is tired.
