How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My focus at the moment is tuition for my five children. Therefore any chance that I get where I receive money I will ensure that I settle any debts they have in their school fee so that they can stay in school. I was also looking forward to opening up a business preferably where I can send groceries so that it can help me sustain the day today needs of my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Personally I am quite grateful for assistance that I received from the organization especially because it finally enabled me to build a beautiful house that me and my kids are currently living. I pray and hope that the organization will keep on doing amazing work for other people as well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I was really looking forward to building myself a proper house for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately I never saw this happening because I never had enough money and I also had my kids to look after. Therefore the minute I was enrolled into this program I was overwhelmed with so much happiness because this meant that I could finally achieve my dreams. Therefore, soon as I got the chance to withdraw the transactions I proceeded to spend over KES 40,000 in purchasing building material which included timber, over thirty pieces of iron sheets, nails, water and even paying the mason as well. After that whole process I was left with a small balance which I decided to focus on nourishment with since it was also a predicament for me.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
When I realized that I had received my transfer, I felt so excited. It was late in the evening at around 6 pm and I was just back home from quarrying building stones. Even though the day had been long and hectic, that alone gave me hope. I was convinced that with the transfer, I would be able to easily afford food for my family as well as build a new spacious house. I felt like my burden was taken away and life would become relatively better than it had been.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I had never experienced moments of comfort as an adult because I had lived in a very small and single-roomed house with all five of my children. However, I have noticed an improvement in my living condition as a result of GiveDirectly's transfer. I have currently built a large house that allows my family to live comfortably. This was my dream at first, but thank God it has come true. As a result, I have more privacy as a mother than I did previously when the children were spending in the same room with us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 40,000 from my first transfer on buying building materials for constructing a new house. I had been living in a singled roomed house together with my 5 children. Due to high occupancy, the house looked too squeezed although we had to bear with the situation because we never had an option. I am so glad that the current house has three rooms, one specifically set apart for my children. Since I was relying on quarrying activity characterized by delayed payment, paying fees became hard. I, therefore, paid school fees of KES 5,000. In addition, I bought a goat for KES 2,000 with the anticipation of raising livestock. Lastly, I bought food with a balance of KES 8,000.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Dignity has been my desire for two years now. One side of my house fell due to how rotten the poles were. From that time, I have been sharing a room with my 5 children. It saddens me because there is no privacy. I will be very happy when I manage to renovate my house. I am planning to use 20,000 KES to do the renovations. A decent house maintains self-respect. The rest of the money will straight go to paying school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I officially became an employee at a quarry mid last year. This was my source of joy because having a steady source of income boosts my welfare.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Incapacity to clear school fees for my children is the greatest challenge I am facing. I am a casual worker at a nearby quarry earning 400 KES per day. Having a family of 5 children, my income is insufficient to cater for all the entire needs. Most of my money goes into purchasing foodstuffs. What remains becomes too little to clear my children's school fees. As of now, the total fee arrears stand at 80,000 KES.
