How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I hope to raise enough money so that I can smoothly pay for all my children's school fees without straining. This is the only valuable inheritance I can offer them since I do not any assets to depend on. Also, I believe that once they will all get a better education, life will be promising to them together with their generation.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well by offering us unconditional cash transfers. This was so unique since it has never happened in our village before. I was able to fulfil the desires of my heart after being granted the freedom of purchasing what I want. I do not see anything they need to work on as they shift to another region.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge portion of my second on paying fees for my son who is in his third year in college pursuing bachelor of education. This had to be a priority because he would not be allowed to sit for his exams failure to clear the arrears. I am so thankful because we would probably miss the exams since I had tried all I could but in vain. He is now in school preparing for his final exam which is also around the corner. I am praying to God to guide him through so that he can graduate and grab a job. I also managed to connect tap water in my homestead. I feel relieved because I will no longer have to trek long distances to search for water in dams. Additionally, I bought three goats for $60. These will be the assets that I can proudly mention anytime since I will soon start benefiting. I also bought food for my family of six which took us threw a week.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
My daughter is in her second year at the university where she studies education. Per semester, she needs to pay KES 27000. However, this time around, I was unable to raise the amount and I was afraid that she would be forced to drop out. As I was contemplating this, my daughter who was helping me do some casual work, informed me that I had received funds from give directly. I was taken aback and also, I felt blessed. She asked me to leave the job so we could head home and plan on how to use the funds but I declined and instead continued with my work up until I was done. Before anything else, I chose to first settle the school fee arrears of KES 20,000.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My life has been full of financial constraints. Since I am the only one working, my husband depends on his pension. My daughter, who is in her second year in the university, almost didn't sit for her exams as we could not raise funds to clear her school fees. so, when I got the funds from give directly, I was able to settle this. I was also able to buy some books and school uniforms for the other 4 children.  Above all, we had a constant supply of food in the house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband and I work collaboratively to ensure that the needs of our children have been taken care of. He's a retired teacher and I sell fish and doughnuts by the roadside. With minimal earnings, it has been quite challenging to meet our daily needs. So, when I got the funds from give directly, first, I chose to settle my daughter's fee arrear of KES 20,000. I then bought the other 4children some books and school uniforms. whatever amount remained I used to purchase some food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means better education for my 2 children. They had all finished their secondary education but with the system of education in Kenya 8-4-4 they were still way back to secure jobs. I will use my first transfer to enroll them in the nearby technical school to pursue their dream courses. With the second transfer, I will start a grocery kiosk in my compound. My house is connected to a busy road this will help me get customers not only from the village but also from different places. With the remaining amount, I will buy two goats which can then multiply and act as my future assets.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I was visited by my sister at my home two months ago. We had not met for more than 3 years, I was overwhelmed to know she has a grandson. We celebrated seeing each other and I slaughter a goat for the come together. Staying healthy for more than 3 years and meeting each other while everyone was well brought joy to my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am married to a polygamous family and our husband is a retired primary teacher. After his retirement life has changed a lot, getting food and money to take care of my 4 children has been difficult. Currently, I eat one meal per day which was not a routine in my household. I have to struggle to put food on the table by cutting firewood and selling it. Sometimes the firewood can spend more than 3 months without getting someone to buy it.
