How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfer in that I am residing in a decent shelter. Back in the days, I was spending sleepless night during rain season due to the poor condition of my house. In addition, I was jobless but now I have a reliable source of income after starting livestock rearing which earns me a living through the selling of milk. Nowadays, I can easily cater for my basic needs without much struggle through my daily earnings.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well for giving out cash transfer. I was expecting my life would be transformed for the better in such a short time. I thank the organization for the aid and I wish it will continue to assist other less fortunate in the society.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the transfer to start livestock rearing like others in the village, it is one of the economic activity we rely on in our village because of the climatic condition. I bought 2 indigenous dairy cows, at the moment, I sale 2 litre of milk at 0.5 dollar each something that earns me a living. Also, I purchased adequate food for my family since for some years now we have been experiencing drought and famine in our area. The remaining amount helped me in seeking proper medication.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I saw the transfer notification early during the day when I was busy working on a building project. On checking the contents, I had received KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I felt happy and rejoiced on getting this financial support.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I was leading a pitiable life and I could not afford the very basic needs for my family. I normally do menial jobs and I could not even build a decent home for my family. My living house was grass thatched and during rains it could leak uncontrollably. I could not renovate it due to the financial hardship I am facing. I did not have another option but to live in this house until GiveDirectly came to me. When I received my first transfer, I bought some iron sheets, timber and nails to renovate the roof. I am now living in an iron roofed house and no longer worried of rains.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been staying in a grass thatched house for years with no hope of upgrading to a better house. My desire was to renovate it to be an iron roofed like my neighbours. Living in a grass thatched home was not conducive mostly during rains which it would soak every item in my home and at times forced to seek shelter elsewhere. When I received my first transfer, I purchased iron sheets, nails and timber to rebuild my house. In addition to this, I also bought a new mattress to sleep on comfortably and replace the old bedding I was using. I did some shopping on the remaining amount on new clothes for my family and foodstuffs that will take us a whole month, since food was also a problem to me.
