My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have bought a heifer. I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly for me. My neighbor at some point game me a dairy cow. I depend on small scale farming and the harvest that I get is so small and only for consumption. I do not have an extra income to buy a dairy cow. When I received the second transfer I felt so happy because GiveDirectly enabled me to own a heifer. I know in the next few when it reproduce I will be able to get enough milk for my family and even sell the surplus at the market to earn an income. I will no longer get stress up on how to get the money to buy dairy cow.

In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.

I spent part of the money I received from GiveDirectly on purchasing Sofa seats, clothes and food for the family. I also paid school fees for my children in various schools and the rest of the money I bought a heifer. This will enable me to cut the daily cost of buying milk.

I was at home taking lunch with my children when I heard an SMS alert on my phone. I stopped to check it and I became very happy when I saw that it was an M-Pesa message saying that we had received the 55000/= that we had been promised. My children noticed the happiness and they asked me what was going on. I informed them of the good news and they were so happy too to hear this. We rejoiced together giving thanks to God and GiveDirectly. I then hurriedly prepared myself to go and withdraw the money.

The transfer has brought a very big difference in my life and that of my family. I have been able to build another house that is bigger and roofed with iron sheets. We, therefore, have enough space. The children now have their room that is comfortable to sleep in and study. I have hence also been able to relax and I no longer have stress about where I am going to get the money to do so. Having bought school uniforms and paid school fees for my children, I now feel relieved and with peace of mind. I am assured that they will be able to study without them being interrupted due to school fees arrears. They are also happy because of this and also because they got new clothes for themselves. The food that I bought with part of the transfer will enable us to have something to eat for a while. I will hence not be having worries about what my family is going to eat. The space in the house was hence no longer enough for us and the children did not have a conducive environment for them to study. I was however not able to do the above because I did not have the money. I usually depend on the casual job of doing farming to earn a living. The money that I get most of it usually goes to buying food and paying school fees for the children. So, when I got the lump-sum transfer from GiveDirectly, I saw the opportunity and I decided to take advantage of it. I demolished the grass-thatched house and used the building poles to construct another bigger house.
