How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I was able to purchase the seeds and fertilizers on time. It was the planting season when we received the second transfer. I plough my farm on time and bought all the materials needed for planting. I used to delay the planting season because I didn't had money to buy the seeds and fertilizers. This means that I was not in a position to get a good harvest. My harvest could not last until the next season. GiveDirectly changed our living standard. It enabled me to get enough food for the family through the pamper harvest and sell the surplus to buy the next seasons seeds and fertilizers. I am so grateful for the support.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses and to buy dairy cows. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the money I received from GiveDirectly on building an extension rooms for my family member. I also used part of the money to plough farm and planted maize and beans. This month's harvers was so good because I planted on time. I also bought furniture and paid hospital bill for my son who was admitted at the hospital.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around six in the morning while waiting for breakfast when I heard my phone ring. Immediately, I handed my phone to my grandson who confirmed that I had received the transfers and I was overwhelmed with joy. Within no time, we went to the MoMo agent and withdrew the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Th biggest difference in my daily is happiness because I have my own high quality cow which produces a lot of milk unlike the low quality ones I had before. I am also grateful that through the transfers I have built a more spacious house which can accommodate more visitors.l am also very happy because we used to plant two acres of maize before but with GD transfers I was able to plant four acres of maize and now I have alot of work. Nowadays, we are also decently dressed with latest clothing fashions unlike before when we used to put on second hand clothes and are confident while walking around.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30,000 of my transfer on building a two roomed semi permanent house in order to accommodate more visitors. Before, I had a single roomed house built over thirty years ago and used to look for accommodation from neighbors whenever visitors were around. I also spent KES 5000 on two three seater sofa sets which are very cosy that one can easily sleep because I had locally made arm chairs. I also spent KES 30000 on a dairy cow which will be an income source for my family. KES 6000 was spent on latest clothing fashion unlike before when we used to rely on second hand clothes. I also spent KES 6000 on two sacks of maize to ensure adequate supply of food for my family. I also spent KES 7000 of my transfers on increment of my maize farm.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My spouse is very old and can no longer perform some duties in the home.An example of this is smearing our two roomed-mud walled house.I have always wished to get some money so I could rebuild the walls with sand so that she does not have to smear it.I think this is the best time to do that.I have estimated the refurbishing to cost around 20 USD.I also intend to buy a dairy cow so that whenever the one we have does not produce milk,we do not have to incur extra costs to buy milk from neighbours.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Early each day,I spend time around my farm doing repairs for my fences as well as clearing bushes.Doing this gives me joy especially knowing that at my age I can still move around unlike so many other people my age.Because of this,I considermorning as the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced is getting sufficient food for my family. As a subsistence farmer,I plant maize every year in my two acre piece of land.Since this area is prone to very long drought periods, the farm produces very little which cannot last us till the next harvest. This means that for my family to get by,I will have to spend some money to buy food-something which I hardly have at my old age. This has forced me to be dependent on my children who already have their families to fend for too.
