How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After utilizing the second transfer as per my plans, I developed another goal that I aim to accomplish. If I get some money I want to fix fresh tap water at my home. Currently, we have to move to a longer distance to get some water. Apart from the distance, it is also expensive to buy some water every day at an average of $0.5 a day. Since I do not have a defined source of income, that amount of money looks so much to me every day which is why I developed that goal. Currently, I have I am in a saving plan with a group of 15 members where we save $5 a month. Through this plan, I aim to borrow some money to accomplish my goal.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Personally do appreciate the support I received from GiveDirectly. I rank the organization highly since it stood out of all the organizations I have known as far as uplifting livelihood is concerned. Through GiveDirectly, I was able to take care of my ailing father something which I could not have done if it were not for GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the second transfer, I had already planned to build a business structure for lease as an investment. Therefore, I bought 20 pieces of iron sheets for $190, building poles and rafters for $124. The business structure aimed to serve me as an income-generating activity once leased out. Before the construction began, my father fell sick and I took him to the hospital where I used $200 for his treatment. I am happy that even though I have not yet completed my plan of the business structure but my father is gaining. I perceive his health as wealthy compared to any investment because happiness for good health is the true definition of wealth according to me. For the remaining few coins I bought some food for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was headed to work that early morning when I heard a message notification from my phone which was in my pocket. Upon checking the message, I found out that I had received my first transfer and my heart was full knowing that soon or later, I was going to achieve my set goals. It was such a good way to start a day and I couldn't wait for the day to end so that I could go back home and tell this good news to my wife.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is that I was able to achieve my goal of building a shop on a land that I had bought something which seemed impossible ever since drought struck our land. I was also able to buy new mattresses and my family have been sleeping comfortably compared to previously when they were sleeping on torn mattresses.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Although I have a young family(wife and one child), I have a greater responsibility to take care of my aged parents who are now unproductive and dependants. Previously, I was able to comfortably cater for them through brewing and selling local coconut beer. Due to prolonged drought, most coconut trees have dried up making it hard to harvest enough product to make beer. This made the last three years very challenging and I couldn't achieve my goal of building a shop on a plot that I had bought in the nearby market. Receiving this money was a perfect opportunity for me to achieve my goal and that's why I spend KES 37700 to build a shop and I'm looking forward to open a business once I receive my next transfer. I also spend KES 12000 to buy to mattresses to replace the torn ones that we were sleeping on and KES 5000 to buy two goats.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been longing to own a business for a long time. I once started a small kiosk at the trading centre which it failed as I did not have enough capital to run the business. On receiving this money transfer, I plan to build a small kiosk at the shopping center where I will start my own business afresh. I believe this time round all will be well as I have great plans and know-how on running a business. I will spend 70000 KES on this investment which I am hopeful will be a source of income for the family of three. I will also spend 10000 KES on buying a cow and the rest of the money will be spent on food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
It was during the December holidays when palm wine was in high demand in the village. As a palm wine tapper, I was earning 1000 KES on a good day which was enough to take care of my young family. I could buy enough food for the family which would last for two weeks.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My economic activity is palm wine tapping which I am only getting 400 KES a day. This cash is not enough to cater for the family basic needs such as food and clothing. We sometimes go to bed without food which has really affected our health.
