How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to construct an underground concrete water tank at my house. I am also planning to purchase gutters to harvest rain water from the roof of the house and channel them to the tank. This is because we are currently getting water from a water pan which is more than two hours walking distance. Similarly, the water from the pan is not that clean for consumption. Achieving this goal will ensure that I have clean water for the family to use as well as selling some to the neighbors to earn extra income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in enrolling poor households without any discrimination. Every household that qualified according to the criteria was included in the program. Furthermore, we were not required to pay anything to get enrolled to get the aid. I wish that it would continue assisting poor households in the community.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $200 of the most recent transfers to invest in my fish shop business. This was for adding more capital to it by purchasing more stocks it so that it may be stable. Previously, It was about to collapse due to the less running capital. Currently, I am grateful that I earn a profit of $30 within two weeks after boosting it with the transfers from GiveDirectly. The income I generate from the business is enough to support the education of my 7 children, two are in secondary school and 5 are still in primary. Similarly, I am no longer struggling to provide food for the family unlike before when we were going to bed on empty stomach for two days a week. Furthermore, I used $120 to support the education of my children by paying part of their school fees arrears. At the moment, I feel relieved of all the stresses that I had about my children not going to school due to fee issues. With the remaining amount, I bought enough food for the family since we are experiencing famine and drought in our area at the moment.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was wakened by the loud vibration from my mobile phone which almost shocked me because it was so unusual to hear from anyone at that particular hour. I gained courage and opted to check where the message was coming from. I was extremely happy to learn that it was an Mpesa message from Segovia Technology. Tears of joy rolled down my cheeks and thanked God for all the miracles he Had done in my life. I later decided to call all my family members and informed them about the special news.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to boost my business which I have been operating for the last five years. The business was somehow collapsing becsue we have been using the profits and the little capital to cater to the basic needs. It has been our main source of income and I was so worried that it would affect my children's education journey. Currently, they were at home becsue of the arrears and I had no idea on how I would send them back to school. After reviving it, I have been earning good profits of KES 700 per day. I can now settle all my bills in time including paying fees for my children. Also, I am planning to save part of the profits and start another business which is whereby my spouse wll operate since he is now jobless. I, therefore, believe that from the two incomes my life will never be the same again.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a portion of my first transfer on buying a water tank ( 5000) liters at KES 31000. I had been yeaning to own it for a long because there has been a prolonged drought in my region which was stressful. We could trek for almost 20 KM to search for fresh water and it was tiresome. It is now a relief to me for now becasue I will be harvesting the rainwater for my domestic use and for my plants. In addition, I cleared school fees of KES 10000 for my two children who are in secondary schools. They have finally been able to sit for the exams with their friends which feels like a miracle. Also, I boosted my business ( selling fish) in the village which I am currently operating in my village. With the remaining amount, I bought food for my eleven family members.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I do fish mongering and the business has picked well and it needs more capital so that I can satisfy my customer's needs. Receiving this money means using 20,000 KES to expand my business by buying a variety and more fish for my customers.
I will use the remaining money to pay school fees for my eight school-going children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband who is a casual labourer used to be at home jobless. Though last month, February 2022, he got a job that could last for more than three months.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My family is currently invaded by chickenpox. All my family members got the disease. I spent 500 KES for each family member to undergo a complete medication.
