How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
No, I do not have any new objectives so far because after receiving the cash we settle for the dairy cows which we had planned earlier. This has been the major goal that I have been yearning to fulfill for years. Currently, I am getting plenty of milk which has been for my family's consumption, and selling the remaining liters to my friends. Having them has generally brought a positive impact on my life.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly is very unique in its operations. This is because, for all those years, I have never seen or heard of an organization that offers support in form of money The cash transfer has brought a positive impact on our lives. The majority of us now have assets like houses, livestock, and pieces of land. Also, it has empowered us to send out children back to school who had earlier dropped.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying building materials such as timber and iron sheets at around KES 36000 and the labor charges of KES 9000. I had intended to finish constructing my permanent house and I am glad that this was a success. The initial one was in critical condition and almost collapsing. During the rainy season, we had to move from one compound to the other seeking shelter. It has been tough all along. I also cleared school fees of KES 8000 for my three kids in primary schools. They are now all in school without any interference like before. Later on, with the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for the family which lasted for three good weeks.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I learned that I had received my first transfer at around 9:32 AM when I was from the shop. I couldn't contain my joy since I was certain I would achieve most of my goals and move my life to the next level. At that particular moment, I shared the good news with my spouse and the other family members and started planning on how we would use it without wasting even a single cent.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now own two dairy cows which I keep in my compound. For many years, I could not afford to buy a single cow despite yearning to own them. However, after receiving the transfers, my desire was finally fulfilled. I know through these cows, I will be benefitting from the milk that they will be producing. I will sell to the local dairy shops and local restaurants where a liter goes for KES 50, thus earning some cash. My plan is to save the money purposely for my three children's fees once they transition to high school or even college. This to me is currently the best investment because it's a source of income that I can rely on instead of depending on my spouse's meager earnings of KES 200 a day. I am glad that I will no longer strain in raising school fees for my children, courtesy of GiveDirectly
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my forst transfer on buying two dairy cows worthy of KES 36000. I have really been yearning to have them in my compound for years but I couldn't afford them because they were very costly. Also, I paid school fees (KES 10000) for my children who are in boarding schools in a nearby town. Thus has been of great help because they are no longer being sent home regularly as they used to do back then. With the remaining KES 9000, I decided to buy household items like utensils, chairs, and sufficient foodstuffs that would at least last for two weeks.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My ambition has been to practice livestock keeping but due to financial constraints, this has not been fulfilled. Receiving this money means fulfilling my desire. I am planning to spend 50,000 shillings to purchase 2 indigenous dairy cows and 4 goats. This is going to generate income for my family of 5 members. In a day I can sell at least 4 liters of milk at 50 shillings which is enough to sustain all our basic needs such as food, and remain with 2 extra liters for consumption use. Other than that, the remaining amount will go to school fees so that my children can study without being sent home for fees balances.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Afternoon is my happiest part of the day. This is because I have enough time to perform my house chores such as cleaning house. Unlike at night when it is too dark and I am forced to stay in doors.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a housewife who depends on my husband who works in an emirates country. His salary is not enough to sustain all our needs such as food because of the high level of dependants in our extended family. Therefore lack of a reliable source of income is my biggest hardship I have faced in life.
