What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
From the recent transfer, I saved KES 1000 through a self-help group, intending to accumulate enough funds to purchase a goat. Recently, my son, who am confident was falsely accused, was apprehended and I sent him KES 900 for upkeep. I also bought chicken feeds worth KES 900 and paid KES 500 for my grandson’s school fees. I used the rest of the money to acquire food.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I bought 4 chicken and 1 duck last month and currently when I received my recent transfer the 4 chicken had 34 chicks hatched and the duck had 10 eggs hatched. I used kes 500 to buy the chicks feed and saved kes 1500 through my sacco and I was left with kes 1000 which is for buying chicken and duck feed if needed.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
This program has done a great job especially during this drought season because i have no idea how we were going to even to put a meal on the table but luckily with the funds received, i managed to take care of that.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
when i received the money, the first thing i thought of were matters concerning food because i am a subsistence farmer and the ongoing drought in the village has made me not reap anything and that is why i bought a bag of maize flour which contained 10 packets which were worth KES 10000 plus sugar and tea leaves which cost me KES 120 and KES 10 respectively. Then i also bought a bag of cement for KES 700 because i wanted to finish building my house since i had no windows and wanted to fix the floor. Also took KES 200 to pay my Grandsons tuition fee since he was my responsibility cause the father passed away. lastly i bought laundry detergent worth KES 150.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very happy because I mostly practise subsistence farming and most times when it is successful my family and I do not have to worry about food for close to three to four months but due to the ongoing drought it proved very unfruitul and so the money would help in sustaining us
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Sometimes my family and I would go to bed hungry and my grandson and my daughter live with us since he lost his father and they both depend on us, so with the money we managed to at least keep him in school and not worry about his studies and we could all afford a meal.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving the cash transfers I decided to assist my daughter in paying for her sons tuition because he had been sent home almost a week ago and because we had no money he had remained home, so I went ahead and paid KES 500 to take care of his balance in the school fees. Also since drought has been exhausting our land I went ahead and purchased five packets of flour that cost me KES 500 so that we could at least afford to have a meal. I also bought kerosene to assist in lighting the lamps which cost KES 100 and for the rest of the money I bought tea leaves, salt and half a kilogram of sugar which cost me close to KES 100.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Purchasing a solar panel will fulfill my desire to have proper lighting. Kerosene has been the only affordable fuel, but inflation has changed the story. Right now a liter goes for 100 KES and it sustains us for only three days. Since finances are equally a challenge, there are days we are forced to sleep in the dark. My mentally challenged grandson is the most affected because he is afraid of darkness. Sometimes I am forced to threaten him that an evil spirit will take him if he doesn't go to bed early. This saddens me and I plan to save 20000 KES from the transfers to change the situation.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I enjoy farming since it is my main source of living. Every morning while I am at the farm, my mind is at peace. I am always optimistic that I'll make something out of it.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Putting up with the lack of enough finances is my major challenge. I do not have a dependable income. My husband happens to carry all the responsibilities and this is weighing him down. It is quite a problem for us to get all the basic needs.
