Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was at around 4pm and I was in my neighborhood constructing a house for one of my friends. I heard my phone vibrating and when I checked, it was a message from Givedirectly bearing the good news of the first transfer. I couldn't hide my joy and decided to share the good news with my neighbor who also had received the transfer. I went and withdrew the funds on the following morning ready to initiate my plans.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is all the achievements that I have done with my first transfer. I am super grateful to GiveDirectly for giving me an opportunity to be part of this project which has transformed my life in a big way. I look forward to benefitting much from my second transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With Kshs. 43,000 I bought a dairy cow.For a long period of time, I had been buying milk just for cooking tea for my seven family members.I am so happy since I now milk three litres of milk which is adequate for consumption and in future if we get more we can sell surplus to an income. I also spent Kshs. 3,200 in tilling and planting maize and beans seedlings in my land. This means in future we will have adequate food hence we won't buy like before. With the remaining part of my transfer, I used in buying foodstuffs for my household members.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I live with my wife alone now that our children have all married and have families of their own. Old age comes with lots of challenges and the only thing that we do is small-scale farming since we do not have the resources and energy anymore for extensive farming. Receiving this money will enable us to start poultry farming, a desire that my wife and I have had for a long time. This will provide us with a source of income when we sell the products from the chicken. Poultry farming requires attention but takes less energy and I saw it fit for us to do it since we are home most of the time.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Being healthy in our old age is something that we do not take for granted. I am grateful that we have not had any problem with our health and has enabled us to do work well and have food on our table.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenge that I have is having a stable source of income. We rely mostly on our children to give us money for upkeep and doing some of the projects at home. Having a stable source of income will reduce our dependency on them and allow us to do the project we plan to do comfortably.
