How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have build a better house for my family. We used to live in a small house which could not host all my family members and. My children used to sleep in the kitchen house. Whenever I have visitors I was so worried because I didn't had space to host them. We could talk outside the house and this was so demoralizing. I do small scale farming, I pant maize, beans and onions. The harvest is so small and it's only for consumption. I also do small business of buying scarp metals and selling at a higher price to get some profits. This had enabled me to pay school fees for my children in various schools. When I received the second transfer I found it wise to build a spacious and better house for my family. Currently I have a spacious rooms, my children can do assignment without any disturbance and have their private life. Whenever I have visitors I no longer get stress up because I have a spacious house to host them. This has given me hope to work harder and achieve my goals. GiveDirectly has changed my living standard and given us better life than before.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses and to buy dairy cows. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the money I received from GiveDirectly on building a better house for my family. We used to live in a small house which could not host all the family comfortably. Whenever we had visitors it was so stressful because I had no extra space to host them. I had always wished to build a house but I didn't had money. I repaired my motorcycle to ease my business of buying scarp metals from the village. I bought two goats, beddings, clothes for my children and the rest of the money I spent on food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the afternoon and I was at home relaxing after taking lunch when I got the message on my phone saying that I had received the lump sum transfer from GiveDirectly as promised. I was filled with so much happiness on seeing and I immediately called out my whole family to inform them of the great news. They were so happy too to hear this and we celebrated together. We thanked God because we knew the plans that we had made were now going to be fulfilled.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
This transfer is going has brought a big difference in my family. I have been able to build a house that my sons can relax and sleep in. They are so happy about this because they will no longer have to go to other boy’s houses in the neighborhood to seek a place to sleep in. The transfer also enabled me to till part of my land that I had left untilled for a while. I have been able to plant onions on the piece of land and I will be able to get some income when I sell the onions. The calf that I bought with part of the transfer will serve as a reminder to me of the help that I got from GiveDirectly. This calf will grow and when it reproduces, I will be able to get milk that I can consume with my family and sell some. I was also able to invest some of the money in my business of buying and selling scrap metals. My business has thus grown and I know that I will be able to get more income from it. Thank you GiveDirectly for making this possible.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The money from GiveDirectly has helped me a lot. I used it in building a house that my sons can sleep in. I also bought a calf with part of the transfer and I invested some in my business. With the rest of the money, I used it in tilling part of the land and planting it. I have always wanted to build a house that my boys can sleep in because they have grown up and it is just proper for them to have their own house. I also did not want them going to other people’s houses to look for a place to sleep or for them to stay in other people’s houses. I believe that it is good if it is me taking care of them, in other people’s houses, children can develop bad habits. I also decided to invest some of the money in agriculture because there is a piece of land that I had left untilled for a while. I have hence been able to plant some onions that I believe will enable me to get some income when I sell them. I also decided to buy a calf with part of the transfer because I wanted something that would remind me of this transfer in the future. Though I desired to do the above, I was not in a position to do so because most of the money that I have been getting has been going to the payment of school fees for my children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a lot to us. We are entirely dependent on farming as a family and the money will help us improve our farming practices. The money will greatly improve our profit margin and thus improve our living standards as a family. I also run a small shop keeping business and I intend to channel some of the money to improve the business.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening once I am done with the day's activities. It gives me so much joy to be able to accomplish more within a day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship that we have faced as a family is payment of school fees. I at one time had three of my children in secondary school and paying school fees for them. Was really tough. It was even worse since that time I was nursing injuries and I could hardly do anything to accumulate enough money. That time was really tough for me and my small business collapsed. We were left so helpless as a family.
